Seriously! I love to hate him.
I love the "majoring in English" part. Remember at that time most women majored in English, most became teachers or married off and never used their education.

As bad as Johnny and the guys were discriminated against for being poor, Penny and the girls most likely got it the worst because rich idiots like Neal would view them as 'loose' or 'easy' women. Hence Neal's arrogant assumption that Penny's break was just an excuse to go and sleep around with the guys.
Taking all of that into account one can understand Penny's desperation when she found out she was pregnant, everyone already assumed she was a slut, now they would have an excuse to treat her like one. Poor Penny, she was the poor girl who got knocked up by the rich boywho would ever take her side over his in those days?
