Don't Look Now : So who was the old lady (spoilers)

So who was the old lady (spoilers)

At the end? The old midget lady?

...then whoa, differences...

Re: So who was the old lady (spoilers)

She was the serial killer that the police was chasing throughout the movie. John probably knows (logically) that it is not his daughter, but goes chasing anyway, because he is obsessed with grief, and that leads him right into his own demise.

I see, thankyou. I probably should have been following more closely but I found it a bit hard to stay focused on the unusual style of this movie.

Re: So who was the old lady (spoilers)

It was likely the serial killer... but I have a strange theory that it was their daughter, though it isn't very sound. The way she shook her head "no" at the end, and he responded "wait". But, who knows. The only way I knew there was a "killer" is because he mentions it at the police station. I guess when the bishop said "I hope there wasn't another killing"... but that didn't trigger "killer", just the common fact that killings happen all the time.

Re: So who was the old lady (spoilers)

For years, I had thought it was a manifestation of Christine and that either: A) She killed Baxter in order to be reunited with her father or B) She was punishing the family for her death - the mother and father letting her play near the pond on her own; and her brother for not keeping an eye on her. Her brother having an accident, killing her dad and thus sending her mother into grief.

Having said all of that, I forgot about the hunt for a serial killer in the film and it could very simply be that. Donald Sutherland has become equally obsessed as Julie Christie about the possibility of their daughter contacting them and it all ends in tatters when he discovers the red-coated figure isn't her and she kills him.
