Don't Look Now : Venice

Venice

I visited Venice for the first time last month and have been keen to see it featured in films since returning. I watched Death in Venice and was disappointed as little of Venice island was used since it was set on another island, the Lido, for most of the film. Don't Look Now really uses the Venice that I became acquainted with during my visit as I walked around many of the less touristy areas and into parts that served the local population. It is a place of tremendous atmosphere andis unique as a city with no roads or cars. It's also claustrophobic with its narrow calles and it's so easy to get lost. Then every once in a while you reach a peninsula and are confronted by the expanse of water on which Venice sits and it's breathtaking. Venice was a great location for the film to express the fracturing of a mind in a state of deep grief.

When I'm not with you
I dream of my hair falling out

Re: Venice

If you liked this film, you will also like "The Comfort of Strangers". It portrays Venice in a similar way. Check it out.

Re: Venice

Another film that lovingly uses Venice as a character in its own right is Summertime. If you're a sucker for romance, I highly recommend it.
