Match Game : Brett is terrible

Brett is terrible

I love the Match Game and watch it every time it is on. However, it would be the perfect show if Brett had never been on. The Top 10 reasons she should have been removed.
1.She is ugly as homemade sin
2.That smoking causes her to look ugly and sound even worse.
3.She is so dumb, she has to look at her answer for a minute when she is called on just 10 seconds after she has written it down and turned it over.
4.She has to use 2 hands to put her card up. Is it that heavy?
5.She talks all during the time they answer, and it is never funny.
6.She always talks down to the beautiful women on the show. I want to see them not hear or see her.
7.She only got the job because they wanted her husband, Jack Clugman
8.She folds her answer card for minutes after she doesnt match, just put it in the slot already.
9.Betty White is a legend, you are not, she doesnt even deserve to be on the same stage.
10.Did I say she is is homely?

Re: Brett is terrible

Well I do think you are pathetic for basing 2 of your reasons on the way she looks. (are you some type of prize??) But I find her to be quite funny.

Re: Brett is terrible

She talks and brings any conversation going on back to her. Gene cant talk to any other panelist about their movies, shows, etc, without Brett having to butt in.

Re: Brett is terrible

Gene always paid more attention to Brett because she had the vodka.

Re: Brett is terrible

"I love my answer." Nuff said.

Re: Brett is terrible

i never loved her answer.

Re: Brett is terrible

Good grief. What a ridiculous thread. If you dislike the fact that someone was on a particular show, fine, but your so-called reasons are a bunch of mean-spirited ad hominem attacks. For one, did you ever consider that Brett Somers never *claimed* she was a supermodel, or the most attentive panelist, etc? The other panelists poked fun at her now and then for acting a little absentminded, or for forgetting what she wrote, or giving a subpar answer, etc. In fact, she poked fun at herself too!

Look, if "Match Game" wanted a panel of comic geniuses, highly attractive people, etc., then "Match Game" probably would have had them! The show was popular because someone unlike you, apparently had the insight to figure out what qualities *do* make a good panelist. FYI, the IMDb Trivia page for MG73 says of the first episode: "Klugman was reluctant to appear at first, but agreed on one condition: that his wife Brett Somers also appear as a panelist on a later date."

So come up with some real reasons and stop attacking people on such shallow grounds! The only ugly thing I see here is your attitude!

Re: Brett is terrible

BRAVO!!!!

Re: Brett is terrible

those were good reasons. just because you dont like them, doesnt make them bad.

Re: Brett is terrible

She was the best! She was originally on the show because Klugman wouldn't do it without her, but she was such a hit that she became a regular. I always turn it off when she isn't on, it's just not as good.

Re: Brett is terrible

I'm not a big fan of Brett but it just wouldn't be Match Game without her.

Re: Brett is terrible

Boy, I'll say. I love Brett!
The interactions between her and Charles are always some of the best parts of the show (though there are LOADS of others too.)

Re: Brett is terrible

But the sheer bulk of them were shallow.

She may have gotten her initial episode thanks to her (then-husband), but her chemistry with Gene Rayburn and Charles Nelson-Reilly ensured she stayed. Indeed, her then-husband was a real piece of work to her ON the show - no wonder she would later divorce him; the problems they had in real life were a bit more considerable than what was shown on screen (whether her then-husband was trying to be funny, it certainly did not come across that way!)

Re: Brett is terrible

Actually, Brett & Jack Klugman never divorced. They separated and Jack subsequently hooked up with some women over the years, but there was no legal termination of their marriage. Shortly before their respective deaths, both of them spoke of their frequent contact and amiable separation. They certainly weren't the first couple who loved each otherbut didn't like each other.

Re: Brett is terrible

FUNNY IS LIKE CUTE either you are or you're not. If you work to be either you end up obnoxious and annoying. Brett works very very hard to be both and fails miserably, of course that is true for almost all panelists on game shows Part of the blame goes to the writers of the supposed ad libs that these panelists struggle to make appear spontaneous. Good actors can sometimes overcome bad writting but not these 2nd-3rd rate "talents" but at least she's better than charles nelson riley [he does not deserve capital letters]

Re: Brett is terrible

Is shepard43 really Jack Klugman??

For the recordI love Brett!

Re: Brett is terrible

If it ishe mispelled his OWN LAST NAME(check his ridiculous 1st post) hee hee

I've never been privy to Brett Sommers, but she really is part of the structure and form of how Match Game was shaped and adored, even though she wasn't even on the first couple of weeks of the showin her defense tho', she absolutely RULES in every guest appearance she ever made as Blanche, Oscar Madison's (Jack Klugman!)ex-wife on The Odd Couple series, and yes, regarding her MG run she can be really hard to take sometimes and most of her one liners fall flat and are met with deaf silence, BUT she was part of the team nucleus that consisted of (like it or not) her, Gene, Richard until he split in 1978 and Charles. As great as people like Betty White and McLean Stevenson (who to me, did some of his funniest work of all time on MG) were, they were not part of that core teamthe show always revolved around themand besides, Brett is great when she plays the comic foil to all of Charles Nelson Reilly's hysterical witticisms and good natured insults towards her.

Re: Brett is terrible

My last name is spelled correctly. It is your ignorance showing not mine.

Re: Brett is terrible

I'm talking about mispelling KLUGMAN

You WROTE:

"7.She only got the job because they wanted her husband, Jack Clugman"

Geez.doh!

Re: Brett is terrible

Whatever
I found her quite funny. Especially with her interaction with the audience. Glad she was there. And she is not Ugly in the sense you are trying to portray.

Re: Brett is terrible

Nope, sorry, don't think so. As someone who watched this show when it first aired (faithfully I might add) starting in 1973 through 1982, I would say that Brett added a unique aspect to the show - as much as Gene, Richard and Charles did. Brett was a staple of the show and clearly the producers liked what she brought to the group - otherwise why keep her after that one "required" appearance (per Jack Klugman's conditions for his appearing on the preview week). Back in the old days, it wasn't about who was pretty or what not. She was fun and funny.

Re: Brett is terrible

A few thoughts about Brett Earlier in the thread somebody said Brett once called another panelist "fat" and the woman was clearly upset. Who was it? Also although Brett isn't exactly a great wit, it's more just by virtue of being kind of offbeat and off-the-wall and a little bit of a train wreck that makes her so compelling to watch. And I mean train wreck in the most complimentary way :) Did anyone see the one where Gene asks Fannie if she got what she wanted for Christmas & Fannie replies: "No I still have to share the dressing room with Brett"

Re: Brett is NOWHERE NEAR terrible

If I may insert myself into this conversation:

Blackie-5, I believe I may know the episode being spoken of, as I have it in my MG collection. HOWEVER, the person who stated that she directly called the actress "FAT" is somewhat of a misquote, though I can see how it could be thought of. *Note: Maybe that poster who said she said that to be mean should watch that episode being spoken about again, and MAKE SURE that what they are saying is ACTUALLY what is being said, NOT an assumption.*

I don't think Brett did that to start a feud. She never had a problem with anyone she worked with, but if that actress did get upset, it was because the woman misunderstood Brett. The actress in question, is Connie Stevens. I believe this episode was a Match Game PM from 1979 or 1980.

Brett has actually said, "You tell 'em, fat lady!" The only other one I can think of, and not particularly from that episode was, "Get your hands off that fat lady!" However, the first one mentioned is the one used in that episode.

She wasn't CALLING Connie fat; quite the contrary. If you watch previous episodes, she says the same thing to Gene, to Charles, to Richard, and they are MEN, meaning they said something that put someone in their place (ie, when Gene would grab the camera and pull it the other direction in fun after jokingly hollering at the camera to shift his focus).

And as for Fannie's wish, that was the Christmas 1978 episode, wasn't it? Fannie Flagg was one of the funniest people ever to cross the Match Game stage. That episode kills me every time. :D

Hope that helps you out, Blackie. :)

Re: Brett is NOWHERE NEAR terrible

"Fannie Flagg was one of the funniest people ever to cross the Match Game stage. That episode kills me every time."
I totally agree that Fannie was the funniest one, but it just wouldn't be Match Game without Brett. I love Brett, she is my favorite regular along with Charles. Richard Dawson is the one I never really cared for. Interactions between Brett and Charles, and Brett and Fannie are classics. When there is any combination of those three(Brett, Charles or Fannie), you know the show is going to be funny. In fact, I saw an episode just this morning without Brett and it just wasn't very good or funny. To me, Brett made the show.

Re: Brett is NOWHERE NEAR terrible

Thank you! Someone who agrees with me! :)

Re: Brett is terrible

How DARE you make all of those insulting remarks about one of the 'sparks' who make "MG" the successful show that it was!

First off, I guess you forgot that Brett gave up smoking in 1977, and mentioned it on the show millions of times. So what if Brett doesn't have 'supermodel' looks - Richard Dawson, Elaine Joyce, and Patty Duke (to name a few) also smoked, but it didn't affect their looks any!

The reason that she 'got the job' was that Jack KLUGMAN didn't want to keep on doing the show, and it was the smartest move they made, because the "Sonny & Cher" banter between Brett and Charles Nelson Reilly was timeless!

Also, so what if she made a little fun of the 'new girls' - so did the other semi-regulars, who also got in on the act.

As for Betty White, the fun 'put down banter' between her and Brett was all in fun - if those one liners didn't exist, the show wouldn't have been nearly as funny.

One more thing - the woman knew how to laugh. That is one aspect of this show that drew me to it. I knew that once Brett started to laugh that everything was happy and good on the show.

I just think that you are jealous that you weren't on a successful show, or your remarks wouldn't have been so hateful to Brett - again, SHAME ON YOU!

I ABSOLUTELY AGREE! Brett is one of the best on the show and any show without her is just not quite right.

Re: Brett is terrible

"I would also like to add that Betty White was not "famous" when she began Match Game and she was most definitely not a legend of any sort. She was talented and had done some TV programs, but she wasn't much more famous than Brett was at that point. She had just begun guest-starring on The Mary Tyler Moore Show and wasn't even close to beginning The Golden Girls. (Which most agree was her most popular role.)"

To say Betty White was not famous at that point is not at all true, she had about three shows up to that point (semi-popular) that have mostly sadly been lost to time. As a matter of fact, when they cast her as Sue Ann, the were looking for a "Betty White-type." Hmmmm.sounds famous to me. ;) LOL, but seriously, I agree with you on everything else. Brett DOES rock!! :)

That's true, but on the other hand Lucille Ball was a legend by the 70's and 80's and she was on "Password" and "Body Language"! LOL :-p ;)

Re: Brett is terrible

Still waiting for Brett to say or do something remotely funny.

Re: Brett is Awsome!!!!

Some people like to start trouble, any ways Shepard43,MP=Brett Summers,I could never seewhy the people always picked on Richard Dawson. I never found him funny,he was just 'there',Brett was super funny,Like who are you to judge people anyways? Are you Miss America? Brett has done some awome work after words her charity and everything. And by the way Betty White And Brett Summers are funny ladies and Should be on the samestage together.

Re: Brett is Awsome!!!!

I can judge what is funny and ugly just as well as you. Giving to charity doesnt make you a good person or funny . Stick to the subject.

Re: Brett is Awsome!!!!

I am so sorry shepard43, but Brett one of the original "Broads" and for you to say that she does not belong on The Match Game is offensive to me. Broads are the rare breed that do not need to look or act like EVERY other woman to be famous or funny. They do not need plastic surgery to smooth out so-called "imperfections", to them it was called "CHARACTER". Character is one those things that so many people lack today. Brett is funny, witty, beautiful and kind. We could all learn a little from her. She and Charles and Richard had (if I may opine) some of the funniest interactions ever captured on a game show. Not to mention her interactions with the contestants and Gene Rayburn. The Match Game is one of my favorite shows, it would not be the same without her. To say it would be better without her is sacrilege. The double entendre that she feigned offense to is always fantastic, because she more than likely had a "dirty" answer. Perhaps it is a dry sense of humor that eludes you. And there is nothing wrong with that. aura.gif

Re: Brett is Awsome!!!!

^ DITTO!!

Re: Brett is Awsome!!!!

Everything was about her. If any other woman got a laugh or a comment she had to do something outragiuos to get the spotlight back on her. Asking to have the question repeated was a favorite ploy to get the attention off the HOT panelist.

Re: Brett is Awsome!!!!

I have great sence of humor, that is why I laughed at your idiot response. Brett was hoorible, degrading the panelist did show her lack of character.

Re: Brett is terrible

You are dumb.

Re: Brett is terrible

I always liked Brett. Loved her seat too, in between two guys.

As for all of this stuff listed about her, it's not that serious.

If you haters don't like it, then don't *BLANK* it!

Re: Brett is terrible

I agree with the OP and think most of the rest of you are insane. Brett was hideously untalented and annoying as hell.

1. I remember when, after Match Game went off the air, she said that Richard Dawson wasn't good looking, going so far as to say he was "sexy as a snail." I wanted to be like "Uh, Pot, have you met Kettle?"

2. She always needs the damn question repeated to her. Is she stupid, does she have short-term memory or what?

3. What is with all the theatrics of tearing your card in half? To draw even more attention to herself.

4. Betty White and Fannie Flagg are loads more talented and I just love when they hurl a wicked insult at her. She deserves it.

Also, I'll add these:

5. What the hell has this woman done? I seriously have never seen her in a movie, television show, commercial or anything. She's pretty much known as that lady who did Match Game.

6. She's kind of a bitch to the audience and constantly swears and insults them.

7. Can you say "Publicity whore?". I swear to God, this woman just revels in attention. Remember that lady who said "Cuckoo, Friend and Ollie?" and Brett just had to chime in with her retarted two cents to get the focus back on her by saying "I quit!". What was the purpose of that? So she gave a dumb answer, why does Brett want to quit?

8. I think the only thing that saved her was interactions with Gene and Charles, but it's been pretty well documented that they were also both major league ass-holes on and off the set as well, and like Brett, who knows them outside of MG? Richard Dawson was the nicest and it's no secret why all the contestants picked him and he had success outside of the show.

9. that annoying laugh. ugh.
