High Maintenance : Is this a comedy?

Is this a comedy?

This was described as a comedy, and there are moments where characters say things that are technically amusing, but do people see this as a "ha ha" comedy show? It hit me more as a sad (but good) show in which people occasionally said funny things, although most of those things weren't much funnier than you'd hear in real life. Just curious if people who like this find it genuinely laugh inducing.

Re: Is this a comedy?

No, it was never a ha-ha funny comedy. The show does have some comedic moments, though. Of the web episodes, my favorite was "Qasim".

The HBO series so far has been much more poignant, which is not a downside IMO.

Re: Is this a comedy?

wouldn't it either be a comedy or drama? pretty sure most people would say comedy is more accurate, even if it doesn't appeal to their sense of humor.

Re: Is this a comedy?

Orange Is The New Black is labeled as a comedy, too. Comedy isn't all double-entendres and punch lines. Sometimes it's more situational. So, is High Maintenance a comedy? Sometimes yes. Sometimes no. Another show that plays with the form is "You're The Worst," a 'comedy' that often takes darker, dramatic turns. "Baskets" and "Man Seeking Woman" sure have little in common with "The Big Bang Theory." "Togetherness" was another one (sadly gone too soon) that broke with tradition, but could be both touching and humorous. I think Louis C.K. deserves the most credit for re-shaping the current broadcast comedy landscape and pushing the boundaries of what a comedy can be. Personally, I think the traditional sit-com form that dates back to Lucy and Desi has become pretty tired and really enjoy having all these new options.
