Trading Places : is this a Christmas movie?

is this a Christmas movie?

I don't consider it a Christmas movie. it's background is Christmas but it's framework and focal point is not Christmas. it's just a comedy which happens to take place around Christmas.

Re: is this a Christmas movie?

It is in Italy.

Since 1997 it has been broadcast by the same italian channel every 24th or 25th December.

19 straight years, including today.

Re: is this a Christmas movie?

It was on TV this past Thanksgiving. I think it has some clout as a holiday-esque film.

But I know what you're saying, Christmas isn't the focal point. In fact, it seems to kinda come and go with little consequence.

"If it seems too complicated, make it easy on yourself: just send money."

Re: is this a Christmas movie?

Some do consider it a Christmas movie. Me? I just know it's appropriate to watch it around Christmas.

Hey there, Johnny Boy, I hope you fry!

Re: is this a Christmas movie?

You could say that about other classic "Christmas" movies such as:

Home Alone
Gremlins
Die Hard

Which could take place at any time of the year and still work. However, I think setting this movie to a Xmas backdrop gives it more charm and character for some reason.

Re: is this a Christmas movie?

Technically no, since it's not really relevant to the overall story. Same with DIE HARD and LETHAL WEAPON. Doesn't stop me from watching them around Christmas, though.

Re: is this a Christmas movie?

good, finally someone on here with some sense and discernment. I mean yeah die hard takes place around Christmas time and they talk about Christmas in this movie and they have Christmas objects in it and there is a Christmas party in the building for that company.

but die hard is an action movie and there isn't the kind of humor that would make it a Christmas movie and there isn't enough humor for it to be a Christmas movie, it being an action movie. and lethal weapon takes place around Christmas time? really I never knew that. but then again i've never seen lethal weapon.

let's be real here a Christmas movie has to be either a warm hearted comedy like national lampoon's Christmas vacation, or a coming of age, growing up comedy like a Christmas story or a heart warming drama like a Christmas carol to be a Christmas movie.

I mean people dont' watch Christmas movies to be scared like when watching a horror movie or to be sad really or to get their adrenaline pumping like when watching an action movie and if they do then they dont' know what a Christmas movie is if they consider die hard a Christmas movie. you can watch a horror movie set around Christmas around Christmas time or you can watch an action movie set around Christmas around Christmas time but these movies are not Christmas movies they are horror movies set around Christmas time or action movies set around Christmas time.

the Christmas things that happen in trading places are incidental, meaning they just so happen to happen while the main things in the movie happen.
