Screenwriters : Question

Question

do you need to go to school to learn how to write a screenplay

Re: Question

No. There are a lot of good books on the craft.

Also, this is probably not the best forum to ask stuff like this. Try Shop Talk Writers farther up the front page.

Re: Question

Just like with Directors and Producers, there are many greats who never went to film school, and there are many who did.

Going to film school won't make you a good anything, but it might provide the structure and mentoring you need to make it over the hump from amateur to professional. It's one way, not the only way.

Re: Question Screenwriting How to's

Head on over to 'ShopTalk Writers' board on IMDB. Youll find a lot of information on how to write screenplays and where to start looking for information on the board. Some of it is on the FAQs and other posts... just spend time reading it! There is an incredible about of information there.

Re: Question

Ideally, you should do exactly the opposite. Rich life experience can make great scripts.

But I will also say this: if you're going to get any kind of b.a. degree, I've noticed that people who get undergrad degrees in Creative Writing come out hella hot. Prolific and well-trained in story craftsmanship. So much better than a generic 'English' degree.

I knew one girl who wound up writing for Pixar, for example.
