Re: Why is it that when someone is biracial
As someone that society would refer to as "biracial".. I think this term is offensive.
I prefer to be called a genetic prototype.. or a hybrid. As do all people who have parents of different races.. a2000nd I know this because I am the spokesmen for all "non-pures" (non-pure is also an acceptable title for us)

as someone who isn't, but technically is multiracial with a mixed mother, I think the term hybrid is silly and I'm sure not all mixed people want label.
I think chameleon would be better for the Rashida Jones's, Elizabeth Atkins, Amanda Marshalls and Jennifer Beals - the later 3 lighter than Rashida. The thing about the last 3 is they can be in a crowd of white people and hear them say some awful things about blacks and others who are dark. And you wonder why blacks still say racism is still around.

Re: Why is it that when someone is biracial
I only see her as a very beautiful woman. And nobody can convince me otherwise
Re: Why is it that when someone is biracial
They become black when the have reached a pinnacle of their chosen profession. Prior to that they stay politically correct and personally comfortable with whatever they preferred to be considered. When they call themselves black it usually means that they will now use it as a tool. I would ascertain from those with the background of the likes of Obama had considered himself "half-white" throughout his life until he received his JD, and took his job in Chicago - he used his black s238ide to gain trust and guarantee himself a position within politics, where he continues to use his color in order to gain affluence.

You're so ignorant. If Obama gets pulled over for speeding, or caught shoplifting, no cop would ever call him in as "half-white". He's been regarded as black for all of his life because he LOOKS blackthat's AmericaHalle Berry could never play Queen Elizabeth or any other "pure" white historical character because she LOOKS black. These people don't CHOOSE to call themselves black, we label them as black because of how they look.

Re: Why is it that when someone is biracial
Maybe, it was Rashida who would like to be referred as a white person and Halle Berry would prefer to be referred as a black person. Who cares. our crap all looks the same.
I would consider myself bi-racial. My father is scottish (that's as white as you can get) and my mother is Colombian. Some of her distant relatives are Mulattos, so I have that "look", but many would say I am white because I have white skin like a white person, blue eyes, and light brown hair. To myself, I look spanish. I have large facial features (eyes, nose, lips, che1354ekbones, etc.) and the bone structure of distant native americans, but to the world, I'm just a white girl with big facial features. Doesn't bother me.

shes not into black guys
she only dates white guys

Re: Why is it that when someone is biracial
yet!
give it time. she dates white guys but never married any of them.
Mark Ronson doesn't count since he's into music like her dad. I'm willing to bet one day Rashida will marry a black man like Mariah Carey did.

Re: Why is it that when someone is biracial
Omg, bluepurpleandgreen, we could be twins! Well almost. My father is Scottish and English and my mother is Mexican and as brown as you can get. I came out with blue eyes, pale skin and blonde hair which turned to light brown eventually and is now dyed blonde.

Re: Why is it that when someone is biracial
because most people just have a quick glance and make up their mind in an instant and it really comes down to superficial skin-deep reactions.
Rashida commented on how the outside world looks at bi-racial individuals in this great magazine article almost 10 years ago in a long interview that was done with her and her older sister Kidada. Kidada supposedly had it 'tougher' growing up and even though they are full-siblings, at first glance Kidada looks more 'african american' than rashida.

Re: Why is it that when someone is biracial
Well, Halle Berry made SUCH a big deal about winning her Oscar and how it was such a big step for African Americans and that she was hopefully clearing the path for other African Americans to do the same, etc. THAT'S why Halle Berry is always referred to as African American, because SHE makes a such a big deal about it herself.
Re: Why is it that when someone is biracial
Good question. You can tell Rashida is black and have some mixtures in her, but when I first saw her on screen I thought she was black but just mixed with something. Or just light skinned. Then actress Halley Berry when I first saw her in those Spike Lee movies I honestly thought she was black, even now she still looks more black then mixed. I guess its just her skin tone and Paula Patton I thought she was mixed myself. She is fully black.
That is like that one news lady Soledad Obrien she is mixed I never would have thought that I think her dad is black and her mom is mixed with something. Soledad can pass for a white person.

Re: Why is it that when someone is biracial
Paula Patton is biracial. She just doesn't refer to herself as such. Her mother is white and father is black.
Re: Why is it that when someone is biracial
I know I can.
Rashida is darker than Jennifer Beals. I knew Rashida was black or had black in her, but for the longest time (until an article in Ebony 1990 lol) I thought Jennifer was white.

Re: Why is it that when someone is biracial
She looks White, are you blind and stupid? She's not even half Black. Her father is very mixed, not directly mixed but he does have a lot of White in him. He's very light. I'd say that Rashida is only 25% Black, just like Mariah Carey. Mariah Carey's father wasn't 100% Black, he was half Hispanic.

I always find the tone of comments like these to be very sad. Some people are very determined to prove that someone who is attractive or successful with black ancestry only has A TINY ITTY BITTY WHITTLE bit of it and that they're actually mostly white, therefore validating that person's success or attractiveness.
This is exactly the reason why actresses like Rashida Jones and others with mixed (specifically black) ancestry tend not to play it up too much because it can hurt their careers thanks to idiots who have a problem with women who aren't white. Asian and (light skinned) Hispanic women can still usually find a niche somewhere, but not a dark skinned woman of any background unless she is insanely talented or a token is needed (usually to be made fun of).
Young, thin,1c84 beautiful dark skinned black or hispanic women have a better shot at becoming astronauts than the main woman in a Hollywood film.
Don't try to cash in love, that check will always bounce.
Re: Why is it that when someone is biracial
I agree, it's sad. Heck, no one would be rationalizing that Rashida's full blooded sister Kidada isn't black. Race in this country is all based on how people are perceived and pretty much has jack diddly with someone's actual genes, background or parentage. Professor Gates, genetically speaking, is mostly white and Condoleeza Rice is only half black according to genetic tests but would anyone buy them as biracial? Nope. Would anyone buy Heidi Klum's kids as biracial if they didn't know? Same with Lauren London, Scary Spice, and Rachel True. Yet people like Rashida Jones and Wentworth Miller get rationalized how they are supposedly "not black" even though that's how they view themselves. Some of you need to hang around more mixed people, even full blooded siblings can be seen as different races even though they have the exact same background. Kimora Lee Simons and Amerie have the exact same background.
I wish we could finally get rid of the paper bag and ruler test.

@westcoastisthecoast
No, YOU sound ridiculous, because her dad, Quincy Jones, is a BLACK man, and has never claimed to be anything else, period. Plus Rashida Jones she has stated that she also sees her herself as black as well as white, no matter how white she looks. So whatever you think she is in the end dosen't matter because that how SHE sees herself, which is more important.

No. The reason Halle Berry is always referred to as African American is because she LOOKS African American, and she knows this. However, Halle mentions her white mother a lot as well.
Re: Why is it that when someone is biracial
Because "black" refers to the way a person looks and not their race, dummy. Why the hell would you call a white looking person black?

Re: Why is it that when someone is biracial
This has NEVER BEEN TRUE. In America "black" directly refers to an ethnicity/community of people. Where are you from?
Black has little to do with your skin color
Black has little to do with your skin color
Re: Why is it that when someone is biracial
Ever called a white guy black, Dr.?
I came, I saw, I laughed, I left.

Re: Why is it that when someone is biracial
It's a mainly American problem. In my (very) mixed race country, no one would even care to mention this. I'm always surprised when there are threads about someone's 'race'.
Please do not make negative comments about a film YOU NEVER SAW. It makes you look stupid.

Re: Why is it that when someone is biracial
I hope to live to see the day when we all look at someone and not even think for a second about what color their skin is. We are all of one race. The Human Race.
Re: Why is it that when someone is biracial
Why wait? Just pull your eyes out and be done with it already. What's next? Pretending that chicks are dudes?
And what the hell is wrong with seeing color unless you think certain skin colors are bad, dummy?
I came, I saw, I laughed, I left.

Re: Why is it that when someone is biracial
the short answer is 'institutional racism'. in america, if someone has a black parent and looks black at all, they are labeled as black. if someone can 'pass' for white or doesn't have super dark skin, they are considered white or 'bi-racial'.

Re: Why is it that when someone is biracial
I don't know any black families where the light skinned blacks and dark skinned blacks sit on opposite ends of the table. Homer Plessy and Walter Francis White looked more white than Rashida Jones and it didn't stop them.
Now that most biracial blacks are born to white mothers who often live away from black people that may be different for some individuals. But the same can be said for any black person who grows up in the suburbs. Even then it didn't stop Obama.

@vincent-harris1
The crazy divide bwt light and dark-skinned black folks was something started by white people during slavery as a way to keep us divided as a people. It's not a situation black people just created themselves out of thin air. White folks put bi-racial people on a pedestal and told the they were better than dark-skinned people simply because they were white. That white supremacist BS has been maintained to this day by the way light-skinned and bi-racial black folks in particular are still told by white society that they're better than their dark-skinned brothers and sisters just because. A lot of us (both and biracial and black folks) h7ecave seen through this for the racist bull**** that it is, and try our hardest not to feed into what is basically nothing but a white supremacist myth to begin with.
Black folks have been united and disunited over the yearsthat's nothing new,and it's been going on since this country began.

Dear Anna M xxx,
Leave black people out of your stupid nonsense, who gives a *beep* about biracial people and what they choose to class them selves as, you ignoramous, who cares, and as for that talentless bitch Rashida Jones who can not act to save her life, she only got where she has in life because of her father Quincy Jones, so think before you open your ignorant mouth.

Damnjealous much, aren't we? What did she ever do to you? I could also point that being a famous person's son or daughter is never a guarantee of succeeding in the business, or even of having a long-lasting career, period. Biracial black folks are seen as black, no matter else they may be. You don't speak for all black people either, for that matter.

Re: Why is it that when someone is biracial
it's not to do with racism but to do with what your outside appearance is.
Rashida's outside appearance looks white.
Halle berry's outside appearance looks black
Obama's outside appearance looks black
I am half asian and i look 100% european. I have green eyes, light brown hair and my skin is as white as nicole kidman with pinkish tone. I also don't have asian eyes and i have large european eyes with frail european hair. not coarse asian hair. I also have european body. by that i mean i have large boobs and hips unlike asians who normally are flat chested. When people see me. they think i am white.
Most people don't even see me as mixed. Most people would guess iam either italian or greek decent yet iam half asian.
Am i offended that people see me as white. No.
I identify myself as an asian because i was raised by an asian family and even lived in asia as when i was a child however i as a biracial mixed raced person understands my outside appearance makes me look 100% european even though i know half asian and consider myself very asian. I often joke that i am an asian on the inside but white on the outside which is true.
I don't know why everyone here is making a huge fuss about it. It's not about being racist. it's about judging someone by their appearance.

Re: Why is it that when someone is biracial
Beauty doesn't have a color, Rashida is a very beautiful woman along with Maya Rudolph, Halle Barry and a few others with mixed backgrounds I can think of plenty of biracial women who are part Asian that would fall into this category.
Re: Why is it that when someone is biracial
When the mother is white, they are considered white. She is Jewish and white with a black father. Just like Obumble, except he's white and Muslim.

Not always true-everybody who looks white may not even consider themselves white, depending on what culture they were raised. in. Also who made you the expert on what people's racial identity is supposed to be?
