For no reason in particular, except it was the way the script was written.

"Hoss" is just a casual term to call someone, like "guy" or "dude" or "chap" or "mate", depending on your culture. I wouldn't read anything else into it.

Olive calls Micah 'Hoss' in Easy A. When she is exiting Lisa Kudrow's office. She says: "you're up, hoss".

I worked with an MD in the 80s that called me Hoss. Some people use that instead of Bud or Dude or whatever.
