Sinister : Comic relief?

Anyone else find the comic relief with Deputy so and so, to detract from an otherwise thoroughly unsettling, disturbing atmosphere? It sort of felt like in some of James Wans movies, where he adds in these characters that are supposed to be funny but just fall flatotherwise I thought this was one of the best horror movies of the decade though

If you didn't like him I recommended staying far from Sinister 2 (it's not as good as this one but I enjoyed it) he is pretty much the main character.

HmmmmI gotta say I liked him. I appreciate a little comic relief when everything else is going downhill fast in a movie. That's just me though! Really loved the movie.
