Kevin Reynolds calls Rapa Nui 'probably my worst film'

Q: The worldwide success of Robin Hood presumably gave you the clout to get Rapa Nui made. And that seemed like a very, very personal project.

A: It was, and I have to say in retrospect, looking back unfortunately that's probably my worst film.

Q: Why do you feel that?

A: Because I didn't succeed, because I didn't come close enough to what I'd originally intended, tried to do. I could blame it on a lot of circumstances and ultimately I have to take some responsibility for it myself, because I made a lot of the choices. But there were so many circumstances that went against that picture that it overwhelmed it, ultimately, and it was not close enough to what I wanted it to be.

Q: Presumably it was a much lower-budget picture, which presents different pressures?

A: It does, and that's probably also the most difficult picture I've ever done, because of the remoteness of the location and the circumstances we were shooting under, it was like a Werner Herzog picture. Very, very difficult. You go into it with enthusiasm and you say, Well I can overcome everything like we were just talking about a moment ago, and you can't. Sometimes you simply can't overcome some of the obstacles. And that is sort of a case in point, that particular picture.

Q: I'm fascinated, given the film that you did afterwards [Waterworld], that you think that Rapa Nui was the most difficult…

A: It was really, really hard. You know, Easter Island, we had one flight a week from the mainland, and there were times we ran out of food to feed people, and things like that, it was...it was very bad.

Re: Kevin Reynolds calls Rapa Nui 'probably my worst film'

Well I understand he is frustrated by not being able to achieve what he envisioned, but that aside, Reynold's is just too close to it to see it's maybe his very best film! At least I think so.

Rapa Nui is a great movie, let's have a proper DVD already please!

Re: Kevin Reynolds calls Rapa Nui 'probably my worst film'

Rapa Nui was a decent film and Stewart Copeland's score was tremendous. Do you agree?

"Have a better one"

Re: Kevin Reynolds calls Rapa Nui 'probably my worst film'

I agree... and then some!

I think Rapa Nui is a better than decent film and Copeland's score ought to be his proudest achievement (including The Police)! :)

Re: Kevin Reynolds calls Rapa Nui 'probably my worst film'

From a standpoint of writing and acting... a mediocre film. Cinematography and score, incredible. Entertainment value - very high.
That said, Reynolds' best film, to me, is the Beast - superb writing, acting directing, photography and again, music - but with Mark Isham this time.

...and Mrs. Taylor sure seems to use a lotta ice, whenever he's away

The mind if an artist, you're, your own credic

Re: Kevin Reynolds calls Rapa Nui 'probably my worst film'

I think it is sad he feels that. From what I understand though the film is still worth a look.
