Re: homosexual?
One of his stepsons wrote a book where he stated Van Johnson left his mother for a man.
mfan, you're so new.

Re: homosexual?
My mother told me that her neighbor had a lodger named Fritz Peters (who wrote the gay themed novel Finestere 1951). Fritz became friends with a hollywood movie actor and eventually moved away and "roomed with Van Johnson"

Re: homosexual?
I always heard he was hot and heavy over Rock Hudson, and that was before he appeared on "McMillian and "Beard"".
Re: homosexual?
Whoever wrote what you read was ridiculous. They are always trying to claim someone is homosexual so that they can gain validity. They even once tried to say that George Washington was homosexual.

Re: homosexual?
revsolly....you are so right, rediculous, people are just rediculous!
Re: homosexual?
No, people say Van Johnson was gay because he was gay. Why is this so hard for some people to accept?

Re: homosexual?
I think the same.
I think it was very hard for him to live with them. And we know studios in the past time made arranged many "dates": like Tab Hunter with Debbie Reynolds etc.
But gay or not: he was a great actor, very charming, good looking.
R.I.P Van Johnson

Re: homosexual?
OK, everyone repeat after me: Let ... it ... go! The man is no longer with us. Why can't everyone just get over this issue already?

Re: homosexual?
Folks would you just deal with it. The man was gay. All available evidence and eyewitnesses point to this fact. It has appeared in numerous books. There is nothing wrong with questioning this, al least not in my eyes. It's like asking if Gary Cooper or whomever else preferred blondes, brunettes, etc.

Re: homosexual?
Yes, it was a big scandal that broke through one of the expose magazines. It happened in the late '40s. I remember my mother mentioning the scandal, although she wouldn't explain what he did. They were very repressed back then and yet at the same time sordid.
Re: homosexual?
I think Van Johnson was gay, but usually I prefer a reasonable amount of sources from coworkers of the subject. In Johnson's case this would include June Allyson, Esther Williams, Debbie Reynolds, etc. But these sources do not exist probably because they were the product of the Old School [it's not the thing to do].
I was skeptical when I first heard the rumors. I heard that Evie Johnson had admitted that Johnson was homosexual on her deathbed! I wasn't going to take that as proof. I wasn't too sure how to take Schyler's assertion on her father's sexuality considering that he was cold to her and she may have had an axe to grind. I don't feel that way anymore.
But then there was Ned Wynn who outed Johnson in his 1990 book 'We Will Always Live In Beverly Hills.' And there is also Farley Granger who mentions Johnson as a homosexual;
“It [homosexuality] really didn't become a huge problem until the '50s and the confidential magazines started exposé kind of yellow journalism – coinciding with the kind of McCarthy period,” he said. “It was at that moment in time that everybody, Van Johnson and ... Rock Hudson had arranged marriages to try and keep it secret from the fans. I never played those games.”

Re: homosexual?
Johnson's daughter confirmed his homosexuality and said that her mother told her when she was 14. She also said that her father's lover was Allen Foshko.
Re: homosexual?
Finished Johnson's biography by Ronald L. Davis.
Johnson kept a lot of himself wrapped up to the effect that his feelings towards his sexuality and how much he indulged in it will always remain a mystery. It was a subject that his friends considered off-limits. Johnson's image was squeaky clean and he made sure his public image was never tainted.

Re: homosexual?
Oh, definitely!
The problem is... the "fire" might be the person who started the rumour or helped fanning the "smoke" around, not the unsuspecting object of the rumour.
And, alas, I know this from abundant personal experience.
