Buffy the Vampire Slayer : Hardest episode to get through.

Hardest episode to get through.

Beer bad. What a piece of crap. Also the Body for very different reasons.

You guys?

Re: Hardest episode to get through.

For some reason, I can never get through Restless. I know it is one of the widely popular episodes, but it was just blah for me. I also have a hard time getting through some of the mid season episodes in Season 7. Like the one where the girl knew she was going to die and Dawn thought she was a potential.

Re: Hardest episode to get through.

Like the one where the girl knew she was going to die and Dawn thought she was a potential.

yeah that one seem like a waste of time.

Re: Hardest episode to get through.

"Help" was the episode, and it has my favorite moment in the whole series.

When Buffy is killing the demon, and Spike is rescuing Cassie, he pulls the duct tape off her mouth while watching Buffy. When he looks back at Cassie, she says "She'll tell you. One day she'll tell you." Which is, very clearly, "one day she'll tell you she loves you" which is the thing Spike wants most in the world.

The episode has it's own message, but that moment stands out.

Re: Hardest episode to get through.

INNOCENCE So painful

Re: Hardest episode to get through.

Hells Bells - Still havent managed to watch this episode completely.

The Body - Only watched it twice, for obvious reasons.

Superstar - I find this episode completely stupid and dont like it at all.

About Beer Bad, I love that episode because its very funny. Its one of the few episodes in season four that are actually really enjoyable, while many others are way dull.

A gentleman will not insult me, and no man not a gentleman can insult me.

Re: Hardest episode to get through.

Hells Bells

Why because it's depressing?

Re: Hardest episode to get through.

Why because it's depressing?
Because its so out of character for Xander to leave Anja at the altar.

A gentleman will not insult me, and no man not a gentleman can insult me.

Re: Hardest episode to get through.

Ted - There's just something off, and a little forced about it. It did tease an interesting question, that never got resolved; which is, who built Ted?

Dead Man's Party - I just didn't care for how the characters tried to resolve everything with Buffy leaving; and hated everything about the impromptu party they threw at the Summers house.

Living Conditions - Intriguing premise, but there's just something off putting about the whole thing.

Life Serial - Some missed opportunities, but more importantly, just some really bad plot contrivances to force Buffy towards less practical, and more embarrassing employment. Buffy had a lot less difficulty supporting herself at 17, alone in LA, than at 20.

Wrecked - Will never get on board with the "magic is addictive" angle.

Doublemeat Palace - I think the episode speaks for itself.

Hell's Bells - I liked it the first time around, but with each subsequent re-watch of the series, it's lost its charm and becomes a more inscrutable plot plot/convenience.

Conservations With Dead People - Another one that I liked the first time, when the season 7 story was unfolding, but now, knowing where the story is meandering towards, it's just a cluster *beep* that makes little sense for the rest of the season; and Xander's absence has since become more noticeable.

Empty Places

Oh, it was the horse. I'm going to be King!"

Re: Hardest episode to get through.

Doublemeat Palace - I think the episode speaks for itself.

I forgot about that one; it's another one I don't like. I remember being on an Alaska Airlines flight, renting one of their digiplayers, and being excited to see a Buffy episode on it It was Doublemeat Palace. I watched it anyway, but I kept thinking it was only there because it was the cheapest episode to buy. lol.

Re: Hardest episode to get through.

Ted - There's just something off, and a little forced about it. It did tease an interesting question, that never got resolved; which is, who built Ted?

From what I understood..Ted built Ted. Then Ted killed Ted and took over Ted's life and also killed his wife..or did the original Ted kill his wife?

Re: Hardest episode to get through.

Ted was dying, his wife left him, he built Robot Ted. Robot Ted brings the wife back and keeps her prisoner until she dies. Maybe after awhile he forgot to feed her. He stuffs the body in the closet and brings home another "wife." Repeat until he makes the mistake of picking the Slayer's mom. I wonder if any of the other women had children and what happened to them?

Re: Hardest episode to get through.

Hell's Bell's and Empty Places.

Re: Hardest episode to get through.

Both are dire

Re: Hardest episode to get through.

Passion. Poor Jenny.

The one where poor Tara takes a bullet.

Re: Hardest episode to get through.

The one where poor Tara takes a bullet.

That hold episode is hard to watch.

Re: Hardest episode to get through.

Once More, With Feeling. I hate musicals. I have seen it once, but i had to push mute button on my remote control every time they started to sing. I will never watch that episode again.

Re: Hardest episode to get through.

Doublemeat palace. Definitely the worst one of them all. I also have trouble with once more with feeling
I fast forward through a lot of it, like Tara's song, and Buffy's last dance.

Re: Hardest episode to get through.

like Tara's song

Oh, it was the horse. I'm going to be King!"

Re: Hardest episode to get through.

Yeah, I know, everybody else loves OMWF.

I'm just not a big fan of musicals in general. I did enjoy Hinton Battle as Sweet, though. I always get his song stuck in my head.

Empty Places and Dead Man's Party. Not because they're bad episodes, but more because I thought Buffy's friends were awful to her in these episodes.

Re: Hardest episode to get through.

Go Fish is hard for me to bother with its just boring and lame. Wentworth Miller is cute though him asking Buffy to walk him home after the attack was so adorable but otherwise an awful episode.

Re: Hardest episode to get through.

It's so funny. I loved Prison Break, but it never hit me that he was on Buffy until I had a marathon a little while ago. He still is pretty cute. :)

Re: Hardest episode to get through.

Doublemeat palace is just the worst.

Re: Hardest episode to get through.

for different reasons

The Body
Suprise
Passion

Re: Hardest episode to get through.

Beer Bad has plenty to like and even more to dislike but for me I'd rather watch that episode more than Hells Bells. Not because it's a bad episode or any worse than BB, but because my heart cannot handle the trauma of seeing Anya so gleeful about the wedding, her vows, all for it to come crashing down in the end. It's a miserable watch and one that I dread every single time I rewatch the series.

Re: Hardest episode to get through.

Primeval, Bad Eggs, Beer Bad

Re: Hardest episode to get through.

"As You Were" Pretty awful, and zero added to any plotline or arc. The "actress" portraying Riley's wife was cringe-worthy in every scene.

"You always half-scared me"

"That's because you're smart"

Re: Hardest episode to get through.

Gotta disagree on that. That's the episode when Buffy stops sleeping with Spike. Which of course sends him down the spiral to his attempted rape.

Seize the moment, 'cause tomorrow you might be dead.

Re: Hardest episode to get through.

"As You Were" didn't make any sense to me, and for the strangest reason:

Riley tells Buffy right off the bat that the demon they are hunting is super rare. But later he tells her that they breed like rabbits. Stupid, I know, but it was just the first thing I noticed that screamed "poorly written episode"

I'd say they're super rare because they make sure to kill them off quickly to prevent their rapid breeding.

So many stories, so little time.

Re: Hardest episode to get through.

Definitely agree on Beer Bad. I'm doing a rewatch at the moment, first one in years, and I still skipped it!!
Also dislike Passion, Amends and Anne.

Re: Hardest episode to get through.

I get "Anne". It's pretty awkward. "Amends" is a mess that only hardcore Bangels adore. But "Passion"? I know some think it's overrated (it's a top 15 episode for me). But it's not skip-worthy.

Re: Hardest episode to get through.

S04 finale, hands down, this is the only ep up to S05E04 (what i'm at now) where i have felt this way, the rest i either like or find so-so thus far

Re: Hardest episode to get through.

Episode 7.6 - Him

Awful. I skip this episode every time.

Beer Bad is hideously bad. Most of season 4 is pretty terrible. There's good moments here and there but barely a single all-round good episode in the season. Season 4 was like a bad nightmare that took place between the wonderful seasons 3 and 5.

Sad that so many people don't like Doublemeat Palace It's hilarious! The show sometimes really needed a break from the main storyline like this. It's very monster of the week like the first season but it's got a wonderful bleak atmosphere and some great lines! I love the manager especially!

Once More With Feeling I always skip entirely aswell. Just not my thing.

Re: Hardest episode to get through.

Episode 7.6 - Him

Awful. I skip this episode every time.
Probably my favorite episode of season seven. Its extremely funny.

The highlight is the insanely hilarious scene in which Spike stops Buffy from blowing up principal Woods with a rocket launcher.

Also scantily clad Michelle Trachtenberg = heaven on earth !

A gentleman will not insult me, and no man not a gentleman can insult me.

Re: Hardest episode to get through.

And Xander drooling over her, u til he realizes who it is, and Willow saying she's right there with him.

Anya pulling off her bank heists, then later turning off the radio when they're talking about it on the news.

Oh, it was the horse. I'm going to be King!"

Skipping the episode means I miss out on this unfortunately. Glad I remember it well enough though!

And Xander drooling over her, u til he realizes who it is, and Willow saying she's right there with him.

That part is hilarious!

Re: Hardest episode to get through.

Teacher's Pet. I thought about not watching the rest of the show after that.

Re: Hardest episode to get through.

Go Fish, The Dark Age

Re: Hardest episode to get through.

My top 5 are

Where the Wild Things Are (Spewfest)
Beer Bad
Doublemeat Palace
Helpless
The Body

Re: Hardest episode to get through.

The Body? Really?

Re: Hardest episode to get through.

Not sure about anyone else, but for me, The Body IS the hardest episode to get through. Because I have lost both my parents.

I just started Season Seven of a complete rewatch and I made myself watch The Body. I was a sobbing mess throughout the whole episode. It was a stellar episode, and I did enjoy it during the first run (Dad died in 2010 and Mom in 2011). I will probably skip it during my next rewatch.

Re: Hardest episode to get through.

For me it wasn't so much about Buffy losing her Mother but the episode being entirely based around it and not having anything else. My parents were homophobes who abandoned me when they found out I was in love with my best friend and I haven't spoken to either of them in over 20 years and didn't go to my Father's funeral so I am not affected by people losing their parents in TV shows but I just find the episode dull and I usually skip it.

Re: Hardest episode to get through.

I mean, you feel what you feel, but I would argue that you don't have to be sympathetic on a parent/child level to empathize with the other characters who just as keenly feel the loss of someone close to them on a personal level, without a familial bond. Sure, at it's core it's about the loss of Buffy and Dawn's mom, but it's also about the loss of someone very special to Giles, and to Xander and to Willow, and even to Spike. Xander and Willow had terrible relationships with their own parents, and Joyce was someone who meant something to them, because of the warmth she offered. Xander punching the wall, Willow being disgusted by everything she tried on. Even Anya's monolog about not understanding the idea of Joyce being alive one minute and not the next - in spite of the insipid nature of someone of her age and disposition - speaks to a very fundamental idea that most people struggle to reconcile, when contemplating the notion of death; and how we respond to it even when it affects a complete stranger, if we think about it too deeply. Our only concept of death while we're alive is what we can observe through the death of everyone else. It's not something we'll ever personally experience until the very end; and trying to grasp what that means for ourselves to die, let alone anyone else, is a paradox; because we only know what it means to be alive, to be conscious, and death is the antithesis of all that we know.

SMG's performance finding Joyce was excellent; and it's easy to juxtapose her response with ostensibly how any one of us might respond in a similar circumstance with anyone we might care about. And this is carried over when Giles walks in. He thinks Buffy was talking about Glory when she called him, then he sees Joyce on the ground. The difference between what Joyce was to Buffy and what she was to Giles couldn't be further apart; she was Buffy's mother, but Joyce and Giles shared concerns about Buffy's upbringing and well being. They may not have always been on the same page in that regard, but they mutually understood that they were each trying to usher this young woman they both cared about into a dangerous world, and give her the best possible chance to live the best life possible. Through magical candy, they saw a side to each other few others had seen, but still found a kinship; and shared a couple of moments of physical intimacy, that they looked back on with a certain perspective when they were more in their right mind. Giles later sitting alone, listening to the album he played for Joyce in "Band Candy," in the subsequent episode, was perfect. That entire arch was rich with human pathos.

Re: Hardest episode to get through.

The Body, easy enough to get through the bad eps but hard to get through this stunner.

Re: Hardest episode to get through.

Passion was the hardest episode for me to get through, Angelus comes out in full effect this episode, tormenting Buffy Willow & even Joyce by leaving hand drawn pictures of them cause he was watching them while they were sleeping, I wasn't sold on Angel being evil till this episode hit & it hit hard but the biggest blow dealt the whole episode was the murder of Jenny Calendar, I love her & Giles as a potential couple and what Angelus does is so twisted with leaving the trail of roses up to her corspe in the bed made me cry as a young adult, Giles's retaliation was awesome but we knew he could have been killed. This episode is still hard for me to watch as an adult.

Passion. It lies in all of us. Sleeping… waiting… and though unwanted, unbidden, it will stir… open its jaws and howl. It speaks to us… guides us. Passion rules us all. And we obey. What other choice do we have? Passion is the source of our finest moments. The joy of love… the clarity of hatred… the ecstasy of grief. It hurts sometimes more than we can bear. If we could live without passion, maybe we'd know some kind of peace. But we would be hollow. Empty rooms, shuttered and dank. Without passion, we'd be truly dead.
