Ghosts of Mississippi : James Woods was PHENOMENAL!

James Woods was PHENOMENAL!

James Woods' performance in this movie was one of the best acting performances that I have ever seen, and is probably one of the best that anyone will EVER see - wow! Every time I watch this movie I am floored all over again by his flawless, villainous acting!

It was a phenomenal performance. So good it makes my a** hole twitch every time I watch this movie. He really made us hate him. Big up to Mr Woods! An actor that one should never under estimate...

ITA! Woods was amazing in this movie.

What was the quote about black people being careless with their cigarettes?

"What did one snowman say to the other snowman?"

Re: James Woods was PHENOMENAL!

A masterful performance and just the kind of sleazy character that James Woods is so good at playing.

In contrast, I thought Alec Baldwin's performance was wooden, though it seems that he got the Mississippi accent right.

Re: James Woods was PHENOMENAL!

I completely disagree about Alec Baldwin turning in a "wooden" performance. I think he was exceptional in both "Ghosts of Mississippi" and "The Edge" (released within one year of another).

This film was not nearly as good as "Mississippi Burning" (at least, IMHO), but it was better than I expected and quite worthy in its own right.

Re: James Woods was PHENOMENAL!

I agree with DeltonP,ALEC BALWIN`S performance was excellent. quiet, controlled, and very moving and i loved his hair. let`s face it,James Woods is right up there among the Pantheon of great film performers and i believe this is among his best.

Re: James Woods was PHENOMENAL!

I think he did well, for not having been raised in the South, and he was rather reserved.

I also thought Baldwin was wooden but Woods was amazing.

Re: James Woods was PHENOMENAL!

Baldwin, though reserved, did a better job on accent, than Wood, who was over the top.

Re: James Woods was PHENOMENAL!

He was amazing. The best part about this movie. I almost forgot it was him. The character he played seemed so real.

Re: James Woods was PHENOMENAL!

Ya he really pushed hard for this part. Hes a big time activist who really believed in what the movie was trying to do. He really stole the show.

Re: James Woods was PHENOMENAL!

I agree...this is what makes james woods such a household/funny name. I mean, the kids on the cartoon family guy go to james woods high, that is saying something about the guy...or family guy, I don't know which. But he can play the biggest sleazebag in the world or the most meek. Usually he just plays 'swarthy' (direct imdb.com quote from his bio) sleazebags. hahaha. love him! he's always coming out of the pop-culture woodwork and he knows it!

Re: James Woods was PHENOMENAL!

Well, Woods did a great job in an average film. He did get an Oscar nomination for the film and at the time the film came out, I figured he'd win due to all the accolaides heaped on him. But that didn't happen. Interestingly enough, it went to a black man.

Re: James Woods was PHENOMENAL!

Jimmy Woods is a fantastic and realistic actor to me. He was superb in the way he acted the role of a two bit killer. Could there be anyone as despicable as Byron De La Beckwith. Why would anyone go to the extent to murder another human being and feel good about them self. Thank God he was convicted. He makes me ashamed of being white. White people should never have acted this way in the south or anywhere else for that matter. One day he'll answer to the Lord almighty for what he did to this poor family.

Re: James Woods was PHENOMENAL!

Right. Medger Evers was a war veteran who trod where few dared in the early days of civil rights. He was a wonderful, fine man - who ended up shot in the back in front of his family by that unutterable scumbucket De La Beckwith, who strutted his cowardly evil in freedom for three decades before getting his desserts. I can't think how Myrlie Evers must have felt, seeing the grinning, teasing murderer of her husband get off the hook for so long. I'd bet the whole of Hell were lining up eager to take a crack at him when he finally Left the Building....no wonder Woods jumped at the chance to show what kind of a 'man' DLB was.

Kayekaye, you said <Medger Evers was a war veteran who feared to tread where few dared> You meant "Medger Evers tread where few dared"--no?

Re: James Woods was PHENOMENAL!

Both...It is grammatically etc correct but if it doesn't make sense to everyone, then its gotta be changed. So I dood it :)

Re: James Woods was PHENOMENAL!

DeLa was a Marine in WWII, receiving a Purple Heart.

And no, I am not embellishing him, just trivia.

Re: James Woods was PHENOMENAL!

It is one of the most frightening, disturbing, and believable screen performances I have ever seen.

Re: James Woods was PHENOMENAL!

This was one of the greatest acting portrayals in history in my opinion. I believe that someone thought that Woods was racist and that is untrue. He commented on playing the despicable De La Beckwith as one of the worlds lowest forms of life. Agreed Mr. Woods and I applaud your performance!!!

Re: James Woods was PHENOMENAL!

you need to see more movies

i would start with watching daniel day lewis in gangs of new york and anthony hopkins in remains of the day

Re: James Woods was PHENOMENAL!

What about Mickey Rourke & Robert DeNiro in Angel Heart? Very underrated performances IMHO. Woods was amazing in here, Baldwin wasn't that bad, it was good in the film.

"I am the ultimate badass, you do not wanna `*beep*` wit' me!" Hudson in Aliens.

Re: James Woods was PHENOMENAL!

Re: James Woods was PHENOMENAL!

Don't know if it was just Woods great talent or a mediocre script and lousy acting by the other 2 stars, but James Woods was so good, you almost had to root for De Lay. Incredible performance, that made this character eminently interesting and got you to view much from his perspective.

Re: James Woods was PHENOMENAL!

Based on the true racist colors that have come out of Woods since Obama was elected, I think it's safe to say Woods was not acting in this movie.

Re: James Woods was PHENOMENAL!

Exactly!

Woods is a racist bastard and he simply played himself...

Re: James Woods was PHENOMENAL!

I saw an interview once, where he briefly spoke about the film. He said the hardest part of playing Beckwith was the attitude, since its so far removed from who he really is. He had to learn how to suppress his own ideas, so racist slurs would come rolling off his tongue like chatting with a lifelong friend. It must have been very draining on him, both emotionally and mentally...but its still a performance folks remember long afterward. Unlike Whoopi consulting with Myrlie though, Woods refused to visit Beckwith. In fact, the killer was in a cell not even one mile from their courtroom location...and had zero visitors.

Re: James Woods was PHENOMENAL!

Woods was really good in this movie. However, I can't say that I have ever seen a bad performance by James Woods.

Re: James Woods was PHENOMENAL!

He played a smug, arrogant, Black hating White Supremacist well, but his accent was way over the top.

Re: James Woods was PHENOMENAL!

Seriously..... phenomenal? His performance was far from that. I found him to be over the top and more cartoonish than anything and I'm talking about when he was playing an old man. In 1963, he just seem like a backwards southerner, but I think he got a bit carried away in the role. Plus, the make up job was horrible, it looked as if he was just made up. Couldn't they have found another actor actually someone in their 60's or 70's? I mean everyone else was played to be an actual age.

This movie is actually entertaining but it had more cringeworthy moments and a lot of unnecessary dialog. I see why it didn't do so well in the box office. Heck, even Whoopi, she was suppose to be in her 60's but she looked the same age as her adult kids!
