As for The Apple Dumpling Gang Rides Again, The Fifth Musketeer, and Caligula, maybe I misunderstood the aim of the survey. These are not high on my list of favorite films of all time, but that's not what's being surveyed here, is it? I enjoyed them much more than Quintet and several of the other films mentioned. If I read the rules correctly, #1 and #2 on a list of 20 get more points than #1 and #2 on a list of 5, so why wouldn't I or anyone else include a film I enjoyed like The Apple Dumpling Gang Rides Again or Phantasm to fill out the ballot and increase the weights of my top choices?
Interestingly enough, the way I understand the points system eolloe, if you left the likes of THE APPLE DUMPLING GANG RIDES AGAIN, CALIGULA etc (and I am not saying you should) off your ballot and submitted between say 10 and 16 films (but not less than 5), your top choices would actually be awarded more points. I.E. if you submitted only 10 films the same amount of points that would be allocated to a 20 film ballot would be divided among those 10 films - making each one's individual points tally higher. I'm open to correction, but I think there is a set amount of points for the number 1 choice, though.

No the points are always determined by the amount of films included on the ballot.

I think the easiest way to work it out is the bottom film in your list always gets one point and the points advance up in increments of one, so the more you add the more your top film would receive. i.e. if you submit five films your bottom film gets 1 point and your top one 5 but if you submit twenty films your bottom film still only gets 1 point but the top one gets 20.

Thanks so much for the explanation Red-Barracuda, it does make sense now. elloe was right, and I am glad because I nearly always put 20 films on my ballot.

flaiky, if it helps, I think that such a ballot would see 20 points assigned to the top film and the remaining points would come to 190 (19+18+17+16+15+14+13+12+11+10+9+8+7+6+5+4+3+2+1). That 190 would then be shared evenly between the unranked films and each one of those would receive 10 points.
