Classic Film : CFB Poll: Favourites of 1979 **Closed**

CFB Poll: Favourites of 1979 **Closed**

Alrighty let's do this. Time to tell everyone what films you like, this time from

1979
The year of Maggie Thatcher, Ayatollah Khomeini, and the invention of the Snowboard. Battling it out for the gold will be three mega-film-buff-favourites: Apocalypse Now, Alien, and Stalker - and there's a wealth of other goodies not to be forgotten.

If you rate films on this site, here's a handy link to help you form your list: http://www.imdb.com/search/title?my_ratings=restrict&release_date=1979,1979&sort=my_ratings

There's also a thread highlighting recommended films from the year, do take a look: http://www.imdb.com/board/bd0000010/nest/262933608

Rules:

- List between 5 and 20 titles, either ranked or unranked (and additional mentions if you like, but they must be separate and won't get points)

- For ranked ballots, the top-ranked title will receive a number of points equal to the number of titles on the ballot, with each succeeding title receiving one fewer point. For unranked ballots, each title will receive an equal share of the total points that would have been allotted to the ballot had it been ranked.

- Features, documentaries, short films, TV films and mini-series are eligible

- Present your ballot however you like but if it's unranked, make it clear

- You must use IMDb dates. Only titles listed as 1979 on this site can be included; it's far easier for consistency.

- You can play with your ballot as much as you like until the poll closes

And that's pretty much it, as far as I'm concerned! The poll will be open for three weeks, closing on or soon after 21 December.

The next poll will be 2016, run by zetes, followed with 1940, run by Farne.

I'll be waiting, with a gun and a pack of sandwiches.

Flying close to the sun.

Hi 3000,with having read some praise for the movie,I was wondering how you found I as in Icarus to be?

Thanks.

Re: Flying close to the sun.

Hi son, from what I remember, Verneuil's take on Kennedy assassination and Milgram's experience is a decent, uncompromising thriller with a strong Yves Montand in the lead role. Cinematography is not spectacular though, it does not help that the film was shot in one of the typical 70's Paris suburb Villes Nouvelles that aged very bad. I have watched The Parallax View recently which has similar themes and I found a better film on all aspects.

Re: CFB Poll: Favourites of 1979

1. Dalla nube alla resistenza (Straub, Huillet)

While I liked (if that's the right word) this film a lot, as with all of the Straub/Huillet films (6 or 7 I believe) it was a real struggle. Any suggestions in regards to approaches? Or articles/books to read? I think the one I felt closest to cracking and likely the one that impressed me the most on one viewing was probably Nicht versöhnt, but I have the feeling that a big part of that might be having a greater knowledge of the German language and history. In the case of this film not knowing Italian was certainly a deficit as the subs were not quite adequate, but I think there are a lot of other difficulties as well beyond just figuring out "the point" of it all.

Be true, Unbeliever.

Any idea about next poll(s) after 2016?

At that time I'll be busy with the Doubling and I would like to get some work done in advance, if possible.

Re: Any idea about next poll(s) after 2016?

Wow, yeah, nearly DtC time already!
Sorry I'm not sure yet because OldAle said he wanted to decide in the new year whether or not to get back to hosting.

I'll be waiting, with a gun and a pack of sandwiches.

Re: Any idea about next poll(s) after 2016?

Perhaps you and Ale could agree upon a year and decide later who will host the poll? Just a thought. For the sake of preparation it would be really nice to know.

Re: Any idea about next poll(s) after 2016?

As below, the next poll after 2016 will be 1940.

I'll be waiting, with a gun and a pack of sandwiches.

Re: Any idea about next poll(s) after 2016?

Thank you.

Re: Any idea about next poll(s) after 2016?

Right it's been sorted, the next poll after 2016 will be 1940. So January's poll = 2016, February's poll = 1940.

I'll be waiting, with a gun and a pack of sandwiches.

Re: CFB Poll: Favourites of 1979

Hi flaiky,

Many thanks for stepping in and running this one.

My choices all ranked.

Tinker Tailor Soldier Spy (TV miniseries)
Hardcore
Murder By Decree
Riddle of the Sands
The Odd Angry Shot
Alien
The China Syndrome
The Butterfly Murders
Escape From Alcatraz

Go to bed Frank or this is going to get ugly .

Riddle of the Sands

Thanks for the heads up on "The Riddle of the Sands"

I didn't realize they made a movie of it. The novel is great though.

I just looked it up at Wikipedia. Seems the movie wasn't released in the USA till 1984! WTF.

No wonder I never saw it. Will look for it on DVD.

Its amazing how USA Entertainment Commissars prevented good movies from being shown in the USA or cut the crap out of them to make the distributors an extra 5 cents.

I wonder how many good foreign films I'm missing out on right now.

Seen so far:
Wise Blood (1979, Jhon Huston) (2nd viewing) 9 (from 7+)
Jesus died. For obvious reasons the (true) Christians failed to achieve their goals (i.e. (among others) to instill artificial moral codes, memes and values that would lead to the eventual creation of an utopic kingdom for all that have faith in the light of one God, such that the last will be the first), as disparities, violence and disparities continue to pervade a decaying society where the poor, sick and whorish find themselves anew (or always) in anomie. The new insightful ascetic rumblers are false messiah hypocrites (taking advantage of the former failed beliefs), people offering entertainment, microeconomic developments (potato cutters for potato eaters) or marketing, madmen (lonely gorillas with no chains on streets) or an orphaned - I don't need no license - nihilist denouncing absolutely everything, especially Jesus, the former preacher that was wrong about everything. But how can anyone listen to this impulsive, deranged man who's inconsistent (Church of Christ Without Christ is a contradiction), but moreover cannot offer any remedy as salient as salvation, because there is no such thing - he can only offer [le] sec, clair, sans illusion () ce qui est. - i.e. the blind can't see, the lame don't walk, and the dead stay that way / Where you come from is gone, where you thought you were going to weren't never was there, and where you are ain't no good unless you can get away from it. etc. - harsh truth, inhospitable for anyone who wants to continue living. Hence the new preacher is marginalized, defeated by those who don't like his face, and in despair turns his destructive energy inwards, self-abasingly becoming a passively-nihilistic ascetic, esoterically suffering for its own sake.

Wise Blood' (among others) develops all that in original, bittersweet Coenesque black comedy, I love it.

Hardcore (1979, Paul Schrader) 6
What a nice Christmas film. I guess it's never too late for initiation to pornography and prostitutes, even when that involves finding one's daughter amongst that whole adult world (how childish do your blessings, Christmas carols and Calvinist camps look and sound now, right?).

Scum (1979, Alan Clarke) 7
Quintessential realist film.

Pentimento (1979, Frans Zwartjes) 2

Asparagus (1979, Suzan Pitt) (short) 6

The Black Hole (1979, Gary Nelson) 5

Monty Python's Life of Brian (1979, Terry Jones) 7
