Reading these boards I've noticed that many think this movie is set in the 70s-80s-90s (because of the novel, probably).
This is incorrect. The film is set in present day (2000, the year the movie came out), which is best portrayed by the TV set Leto gave to his mother.

I assumed that it took place in the 1980s because of the mention of Madonna and that the psychiatric staff allowed the mom to sign the paper even though she was clearly mentally incapacitated.

Madonna was putting out new albums in the 2000's
