Twin Peaks : Your Voices Are Being Heard
Re: Your Voices Are Being Heard
I've sent a couple messages and signed the petitions. What do you think are the chances of them reconsidering removing the boards?
Re: Your Voices Are Being Heard
You are a glass-is-half-full person I see.
As I sat here reading Colin's explanation, halfway through I thought "they are not going to reverse their decision."
Then, he ended with this:
It's a shame that there has been so much complaining about the boards. I wonder if that was the main reason to let them go?
The years I've spent on IMDb I've noticed a majority of people cannot get past their own egos. Instead of using the ignore feature, they complain or argue endlessly with someone who offends (never mind if they should have been offended to begin with).
It usually starts with "this movie sucks" or "this was the greatest film of all time." Then the fireworks begin. People just can't stand the thought of someone who disagrees with their own personal preference or taste. Ego is necessary for our survival, the wrong kind of ego is always detrimental.
Well, I hope everyone signs the petitions and sends a message (I have). But I think that glass isn't going to be half empty much longer.

if there was a magic wand which could be waved, we would have found it.
I love our boards. I ignore trolls. I am going to be sorry when the boards close. However, I am going be more excited about the new possibilities which we can build and deploy once the boards are gone and are no longer slowing us down.

Re: Your Voices Are Being Heard
In this situation my glass is half full anyway. I think it's such a shame - I remember when I originally found this place when LOST was on the air - it was so much fun. I had given up and left a few years ago because the nasty comments just became a little too much for me - but it seems that lately there are just a whole slew of shows and movies that I'm enjoying and I was looking forward to getting back into this - only to have that hope dashed. It's such a shame - I don't understand why people couldn't just ignore the "trolls" - and of course I don't understand the joy people seem to get out of being complete jerks either. I was so looking forward to talking about this new season but I guess I'll have to look elsewhere for that. Luckily I have an actual brick and mortar video store down the street from me (if you can believe such a thing still exists). Lots of folks seem to hang out there to drink coffee and discuss film. Maybe I can find a group there who will be into this show. Do you have any suggestions for other sites that may be fun to discuss this (and other shows/films)?
Re: Your Voices Are Being Heard
I don't understand why people couldn't just ignore the "trolls"
I have to believe it has a lot to do with insecurity and ego.
Trolling is a mental illness in and of itself.
Not being able to ignore a troll is a different, but important, problem many have.
Re: Your Voices Are Being Heard
I suppose you're right. It's really a shame though - I mean obviously the trolls have ruined it for all of us that actually enjoyed the boards for what they were meant forbut they also ruined it for themselves since they seemed to also get so much joy by being jerks on the boards. Weird cycle I guess.
Re: Your Voices Are Being Heard
"Obviously the trolls have ruined it for all of us".
Idk, for me, the trolls have really ruined nothing because they're still a minority to which I don't pay much mind, a mild annoyance at worst (the one thing everyone seems to forget is that trolls can only have impact when there are people that take the bait). Furthermore, there has 'always' been trolling on IMDb and I wouldn't say it's noticeably increased lately, either; certainly, there are particular boards overrun by stupid activity, but the vast majority of the ones I visit - and I do browse a lot - are by all means pretty clean. In short, bad traffic quite definitely isn't the real reason for doing away with this most valuable feature.

Re: Your Voices Are Being Heard
And thanks to you, too, Xav. Jeez it's been such a long time recalling the days when the Inland Empire board was a live battleground with practically no one agreeing with anyone else lol but great times. Remember Bernie Elms, Nosno, Voided, Dropkick the one and only Scott Purcell. Hard not to get sentimental here. All the best to you.
And, as there's at least something called IMDB v 2.0 generated now, with a part of the current board system replicated, perhaps it's not quite as over as it could be

Re: Your Voices Are Being Heard
It's just about their money and how they can make more money in the future. They don't care. I hope this decision destroys their business.
Re: Your Voices Are Being Heard
Write Jeff and Colin and tell them that, because of this decision, you're going to stop shopping on Amazon. That you're going to get your friends to stop shopping there as well. If it is about the money, make sure they know that they're losing yours.

"If his mind truly were made up, I don't think he'd have quite so much to say".
The corporate goons always have time for bullsh-t and beating around the bush with phoney rhetoric designed to hide the one and only reason these people ever have for doing anything - money. The boards simply do not generate enough income for them to bother and that's that.

Colin's explaining himself now :) If his mind truly were made up, I don't think he'd have quite so much to say.
For anyone that wrote him (and anyone that didn't), keep up the pressure. Here are his contact details again.

Let him know that volunteer moderation works, and that, when given the chance, communities can be very effective at self policing.
Don't let the trolls win.
