Trailer Park Boys : What was the moment that first 'sold' Trailer Park Boys for you?

What was the moment that first 'sold' Trailer Park Boys for you?

Like many fans, I remember being very put off by this show before even giving it a chance. One late night, I was staying up until 1:30 am on a Friday and I remember the final episode of Season 1 rolled around. I thought it was a real documentary at first. I reluctantly watched a bit and found myself slowly drawn to the story. Then a chuckle here and there. About 1/2 way through, I "got" the show's humour/sense of parody. I thought it was genius. But the 2 moments that killed me and made me a fan forever were:

#1. The grocery store robbery. I don't think I had ever laughed so hard in my entire life.

#2. When Bubbles brags about his "tuxedo". It broke my heart, and really me to the character and the show's ability to convey happiness as a matter of perspective.

What about you guys?

Re: What was the moment that first 'sold' Trailer Park Boys for you?

Probably something silly like when the boys are struggling to move that riding mower they're stealing for the cave man and Ricky grabs the microphone and says "hey retard we need some help over here, come fkin' help us!". I mean that was a few episodes in but I'd never seen that happen on television before.

The episodes before that seemed a bit so-so I think. I mean they were still funny but the acting and budget were weak and they hadn't blown my mind with something radically different at that point.

Re: What was the moment that first 'sold' Trailer Park Boys for you?

I first seen it on directv's first run during season 7 and figured it was just some show like a lot of other shows where they get high and completely overact being stoned (tripping/hallucinating, laughing a lot, and eating tons of food) but I watched it anyway and found it was nothing what I thought it would be. I think the episode that really got me into it was the last few episodes of season 7...after that they re-ran the series and all the specials and I recorded them all on VHS. I have them all on DVD now (thanks Amazon) they was way too expensive at the mall ($50-$70 bucks a season). I still love the show, I don't watch it as often as I did because I've seen them all several times but there still isn't any show that's even close to this imo, it also proves you don't need millions of dollars to make a show worth watching...matter of fact, I would choose TPB over any big budget show or movie.

Re: What was the moment that first 'sold' Trailer Park Boys for you?

The title card Season 1 Episode 1. I knew it was a show I would enjoy watching. And when Ricky says he doesn't need to Julian and then immediately asks for a ride, I knew it was a show that I would enjoy watching repeatedly repeatedly repeatedly.

Re: What was the moment that first 'sold' Trailer Park Boys for you?

I actually remember the exact scene......I caught on late, also started watching it later in its DirecTV run, and it was the episode where Ray's trailer burned down. Ricky is talking about setting Ray up with some stuff like booze and food, and Julian arrives acting all condescending and says he got Ray "pots, pans....all the necessities, Rick". And its just perfect because really, even that stuff does Ray no good, his gd trailer burned down. Not the funniest scene in the long run, but the absurdity was unexpected and awesome.

Re: What was the moment that first 'sold' Trailer Park Boys for you?

When Julian and Bubbles are trying to explain how to pronounce jalapeño to Ricky and he has no idea what they are talking about.

Re: What was the moment that first 'sold' Trailer Park Boys for you?

haha good one. i still use a hard j when i say jalapeno. it often gets quizzical reactions from food service peoples.

Re: What was the moment that first 'sold' Trailer Park Boys for you?

Season 1, episode 1, second scene right before they are released from jail. When Ricky said "I'm getting out of jail - thank *beep*!" I was in love.

Re: What was the moment that first 'sold' Trailer Park Boys for you?

When Sam losco runs for trailer park supervisor and gives his speech on mushrooms and then Lahey, in his fubu jersey, gives his speech, then shirtless randy applauds all while the local news is covering it for tv

That's the way she goes…

I was put off by this show at first but the moment that they got me was Rey spending all the liquor money Julian gave him on the VLT's. I had just started playing this new roulette machine at my local Casino and I had been on a losing streak that moment just put it all in perspective for me haha and I was hooked. Ray is the wisest character on the show.

"What are you gonna do, Lahey? Shoot me with your toy gun?"

[sound of gunshot, bullet ricochets through trailer]

That was the moment that won me over. I was hooked.

Re: What was the moment that first 'sold' Trailer Park Boys for you?

This has to be my top 3 tpb moments. That scene is rediculous!

Re: What was the moment that first 'sold' Trailer Park Boys for you?

"I'M ALL TANGLED UP IN THIS *beep* WIRE"

Re: What was the moment that first 'sold' Trailer Park Boys for you?

Bible Pimp: Can you read, my son?
Bubble: That depends. Can you fnck off???

I died laughing and was hooked like a crack-fiend.

Or my name isn't....

Re: What was the moment that first 'sold' Trailer Park Boys for you?

I caught one of the later episodes first... Season 6 maybe... My sense of humor is a little unorthodox, so I just felt a warm happy feeling in my whole body when I saw all the p1ss-jugs, 5hit-references, hanging out bellies, clearing sticks, and a man that thinks his intellect will literally grow like a fruit or something, if he could just get his grade 10 : D

Re: What was the moment that first 'sold' Trailer Park Boys for you?

The movie, when he shoots of his gun in the car giving a speech about how much he loves it. After that I was sold.

Re: What was the moment that first 'sold' Trailer Park Boys for you?

"Hey look everybody its *beep* Reveen!"

.....

"Hey Patrick Swayze!!!"

with Julian trying to stop himself from laughing after the Swayze comment!

Had me in tears!

Re: What was the moment that first 'sold' Trailer Park Boys for you?

First show, first minute. I was hooked.

Great to find a show that is good that isn't UK or US.

The occasional scandy drama, the occasional aus comedy.

But on the whole there isn't much out there.

Is there anything else as funny or close from Canada?

Re: What was the moment that first 'sold' Trailer Park Boys for you?

I was watching some livestreaming shows online looking for something new, the title on the particular page was for something else, if it had said TPB I probably would have changed channels.
I'd heard of this show before but wasn't interested, I didn't actually know anything about it so I wasn't aware I was watching it at the time. It was a scene from the first movie, that short sequence where they were in jail playing hockey vs the jailguards, with ricky talking to the camera mispronouncing his words and teasing the head guard about being attracted to Julian. There were more exchanges about hockey so I actually thought it was a show about hockey or sports.

It all really just flowed really well I knew it wasn't a real doc but seemed natural the way it progressed. Seeing Ricky being so naturally stupid was endearing and I couldn't stop laughing at Julian with his rum and coke in every scene.

Re: What was the moment that first 'sold' Trailer Park Boys for you?

When Ricky first said "Thank *beep*" , first scene. I was sold. True story.

I hadn't watched the movie before that.

Re: What was the moment that first 'sold' Trailer Park Boys for you?

I was drinking at a friends house and he started playing it on Netflix. It was the first episode and it was the "face off" between Julian and Cyrus. And Julian starts throwing his stuff out of the trailer and Cyrus says "Now I want a new tv, I want a vcr. And I want those porn tapes replaced, because those were the creme dela creme." Killed me, and made me a fan.

Re: What was the moment that first 'sold' Trailer Park Boys for you?

As a Rush fan, I watched a super cut of the episode with Alex Lifeson in and fell in love with Bubbles and his determination to see the band and all. Soon I got my hands on the whole fir 7 series and the one that did it for me was 'Mr Lahey's got my porno tape', that episode just had me absolutly curled up in a ball laughing, it's kept me watching since.

Re: What was the moment that first 'sold' Trailer Park Boys for you?

My story is unique, in that I caught Trailer Park Boys : The Movie one night on TV, long before I ever learned it was based on a television show. This was about 2009, and I loved the movie instantly, and the absurdity of the situations and characters. But I thought that was that.

Fast forward to 2014, and I decided to look for the movie again. And in doing so, I learned about the other movies, and finally the TV show itself!... I live in the US, and Trailer Park Boys being a Canadian show, has never really been on the radar screen down here. In fact I was surprised to learn it was Canadian. Because Trailer Park Boys could easily have been set in any given trailer park in America. I've lived in trailer parks before, so I know. So ever since I discovered the show, I've been watching all the episodes on YouTube.

" Cristal, Beluga, Wolfgang Puck... It's a f#@k house."

Re: What was the moment that first 'sold' Trailer Park Boys for you?

The mountain lion episode. Everything in that one is awesome, especially Steve French eating pot fajitas (weedjitas), their device to taper him off the weed, and of course the *beep*

Re: What was the moment that first 'sold' Trailer Park Boys for you?

The very first episode when they get out of jail, and Ricky tries to get in the cab with Julian. julian grabs Ricky's suit case and chucks it. I was hooked

Re: What was the moment that first 'sold' Trailer Park Boys for you?

I dunno, it must have been 9 years ago. at least. then-friends told me about it, I watched some of the movie with them and was not impressed. then we watched some of season 1 and when I saw Ricky swipe off garbage from his car with a hockey stick, that was it for me.

Re: What was the moment that first 'sold' Trailer Park Boys for you?

The first moment that sold me for Trailer Park Boys, is the first time I ever saw it. It was on BBC America for a brief period of time, years ago. The first episodes I watched is the episode where Julian is dogsitting for the old woman, the dog eats Ricky's pot brownies, Trinity shoots Ricky in his butt accidentally, and in one scene one of the camera men gets shot, and they have to drag his body away.

When I watched this, I seriously couldn't tell if it was real or not. It seemed like a real show, similar to cops, but it also seemed too crazy to play on tv if it were real. After watching that episode, I made sure to watch the other episodes BBC America aired, then the show just stopped playing on BBC America altogether.

Re: What was the moment that first 'sold' Trailer Park Boys for you?

Hmm.. this is a tough one. I knew I liked the show pretty early on but I think I was sold with Ray. The piss jugs, "the way she goes", "the guy in the chair", living at the dump.. he's just such a delightfully *beep* guy.

Re: What was the moment that first 'sold' Trailer Park Boys for you?

BOTTLE KIDS!

Re: What was the moment that first 'sold' Trailer Park Boys for you?

i hope ray returns, they brought back sam the caveman and barb but no ray. its been a long time since i saw the series so i don't remember if ray died or is in jail or whatever, i vaguely recall him being locked up, that must be why he's not around yeah?

Re: What was the moment that first 'sold' Trailer Park Boys for you?

Ray faked his own death for an insurance scam. He earned $11.000 from it and moved to Florida.

Re: What was the moment that first 'sold' Trailer Park Boys for you?

First time I caught it on TV, early 2000s, I had never heard of it, just stumbled on it, mid-show and assumed it was a documentary, until *beep* became so crazy it became obvious it wasn't. I just loved the first few seasons, when they'd always get the cameraman and gaffer involved. They weren't breaking the 4th wall, they never acknowledged that stupid 4th wall.

I was already hooked before I realized what they were about, what they stood for, which only made it even better!

Re: What was the moment that first 'sold' Trailer Park Boys for you?

Yeah, I always found it amusing that they blamed the camera crew for everyone ending up in jail. As if it were their fault just for being there. I loved this line in Countdown to Liquor Day where Ricky goes off on them after the boys are busted trying to rob the bank:

Ricky: It's this documentary crew! Look at this guy! With the microphone in his hand!
Somebody arrest...And this *beep* camera dick, right here! You *beep* guys caused this accident. We didn't do *beep* We didn't do *beep* What the *beep* is this van right here?
You caused the *beep* accident! Told you not to come in the bank.

Appeals to the Lowest (Possible) Common Denominator

I tried to watch the show one time and only got through a few minutes before I turned it off as utter garbage. Then one night I was bored and watched one of the movies, probably "Countdown to Liquor Day" and it was so dumb it was funny. And suddenly I "got it", what TPB is all about. After that I was hooked and I went back and watched every episode, every movie (multiple times) and all the specials. There is something "universal" about the show that appeals to the lowest (possible) common denominator in all of us. The show IS utter garbage, and that's what makes it so great. It is sheer comic genius.

Re: What was the moment that first 'sold' Trailer Park Boys for you?

The first time I saw the show, was actually the first movie. I didn't even realize it was a TV show until I found it on Netflix. Ironically, the movie is now like the least favorite thing Ive seen of them. The moment I guess was when Ricky said "I need to start selling drugs again so I can get my life together!"

Re: What was the moment that first 'sold' Trailer Park Boys for you?

I will always remember the exact moment that I fell in love with this show.

I watched the first episode and hated it, but I kept watching because I was bored and still curious about the show. The second episode was a little better, but I still didn't really "get it". By the third episode, I was about to call it quits, because it wasn't getting any better. Then this happened:

"Just remember, Lahey: what comes around is all around."

At that very moment, everything kind of clicked with me, and I burst out laughing. I can't even pinpoint what it was I finally "got", but whatever it was, I felt this deep plutonium kind of love sh*t hit me out of nowhere.

Re: What was the moment that first 'sold' Trailer Park Boys for you?

I loved this shot from the get go, and I know my favorite moment comes a little late in the series..

But the scenes involving Ricky and Conky really put this show in in a higher spot on my favorites list. When Ricky had that rag glued to his face and kept turning around in the car to strangle a hand puppet? Haah! Too funny :)

I'm glad they brought him back for season 8 and added Bobby Turkalino. That *beep* was golden :P

Re: What was the moment that first 'sold' Trailer Park Boys for you?

I guess I started to watch the series from season 1 and I remember Ricky and Lahey being the first characters that really clicked with me. Then the others growed on me too.

Re: What was the moment that first 'sold' Trailer Park Boys for you?

Bubbles and the kitties...so cute, drew me in...It was Conky, omg...friggin hilarious!

Re: What was the moment that first 'sold' Trailer Park Boys for you?

"Can you read, my son?"

"Well that depends, can you go *beep* yourself?"

Re: What was the moment that first 'sold' Trailer Park Boys for you?

Season 1, episode 6 is my favorite episode by far. I feel like the end scene with the wedding is what the show was originally all about. When Julien looks at Candy and gives her a kiss, then fires off his handgun while police arrest him was very emotional amongst all the humor. Julien would never abandon Ricky, so he chooses to go back to jail. That scene did it for me, and it cemented my opinion of Julien as trailer park hero forever.

Re: What was the moment that first 'sold' Trailer Park Boys for you?

I am a big fan of TV comedy and am a massive fan of Always Sunny. A couple of my friends love TPB and I noticed some Sunny fans praising TPB in some imdb threads so thought I'd give it a go. I am only halfway through the 4th Series and this already holds a place as one of my favourite comedies. I am so happy I have another 4 series, the specials, the movies and the live performances to still look forward to seeing for the first time.
I started with the black and white film, which didn't do much for me but the series started to grow on me as I made my way through. The 3 moments that sealed TPB as a TV comedy classic for me are:

1> Early Season 2 I think. Bubbles talking about stealing carts and selling them to a rival supermarket and that he has been playing two supermarkets off each other for 20 years. Also when Ricky becomes Mall Cop and put in charge of stopping the cart thief and Bubbles says, 'Who the *beep* does he think he is, King of the carts?'

2> S03E05. The Rush episode. This whole episode is great but there's a whole scene focusing on Randy refusing to wear a shirt. Topped off with Mr Lahey's line, 'Randy doesn't wear shirts.' A classic episode.

3> S04E05. Conky. This is where I am up to and possibly one of the best TV episodes I have ever seen.

Re: What was the moment that first 'sold' Trailer Park Boys for you?

I first heard of TPB from a friend who casually mentioned his wife's sister was involved in the production. Neither he nor his wife had seen it. I taped the first few shows and showed them to my buddy and his wife. They were shocked; they were convinced the sister had ruined her career before it started (she was fresh out of film school when she got the gig)!

Anyway, I'm sure the sister is doing well in the bizz...

Re: What was the moment that first 'sold' Trailer Park Boys for you?

Got the first season disc from Netflix. Almost turned it off after the first episode. But I figured there's three more, what the heck. I think it was ep 2 when Julien let Ricky live in his car when suddenly there's gunfire. Ricky was outside firing his gun indiscriminately at the barking dogs that were keeping him awake. Holy hell, that was funny!

Also, I have an uncle who is a spot on "Ricky". Everything from mispronouncing words to blaming everyone except himself for all of his problems.

Careful man there's a beverage here!

Re: What was the moment that first 'sold' Trailer Park Boys for you?

Definitely everything that makes up the scene that culminates in Trinity accidentally shooting Ricky.

Victoria: J-ROC, I think you're saying it way too much.

J-ROC: Sayin' what?

Victoria: Know'm sayin'?!
Stacey: Know'm sayin'?!
