Crazy/Beautiful : The 'REAL' Ending?
Re: The 'REAL' Ending?
I don't know for sure, but the director's commentary mentions thatthe script was darker also the pool scene in the montage was 'originally' at the motel - maybe they didn't go back home??
Re: The 'REAL' Ending?
In the director's commentary, the director said that Carlos was meant to die in the ending but they had to change it.
Re: The 'REAL' Ending?
I think that at the motel she should have killed herself thinking it's what would be best for Carlos. Whada ya think?
Re: The 'REAL' Ending?
Also it is shown in the dvd that the original ending had Carlos not Nicole saying that they should return home not run away together. You can in the shot where Nicole tells Carlos she "wants to be good" for him that her hair is red, because at the time of the re-shoot she was filming spiderman!
And yeah I cant believe they thought about killing off Carlos! I thought after all that him and Nicole had been through in the film they deserved to be together and happy! :) Also I love that shot of Carlos at the end in his pilot uniform.

Re: The 'REAL' Ending?
heehee, that would've been sooo melodramatic!
and perfect for this film!

Re: The 'REAL' Ending?
The director's commentary also said it was the studio who wanted the movie to end with Carlos' death. He didn't think the movie needed it. He thought it was rare for a studio to go for a non happy ending.

Re: The 'REAL' Ending?
If either Carlos or Nicole died, then it would follow the Hollywood formula that miscegenation or mixed race couples were not meant to be and tragically end. I wouldn't be surprised if that was the "true" ending. So, in a way, the movie is more better in regards to not following the typical model, however, it would have been more emotional, though many won't be happy with it.
While you made the contrast between Carlos and Nicole, I believe Carlos's character is really unrealistic, and looking at his character in terms of the film, it only reinforces the character of Nicole, whose storyline is more resolved than Carlos's.

Re: The 'REAL' Ending?
Well. I love this movie and the ending is just fine with me. But! I think that the original ending (where Carlos gets killed) or if Nicole would have killed herself it would have been more realistic and a better ending in my opinion.
Re: The 'REAL' Ending?
I like the happy ending. It would have pissed me off if they didn't end up together, haha. But I think it's somewhat realistic that Nicole would end up not killing herself because of Carlos, and it would have been retarded if Carlos died just because it would have made the movie sadderit was depressing enough to me. I dunno, maybe I'm weird, but I like happy endings. Life is depressing enough on its own, I at least want things in movies to turn out nice. :)

I think they should of ran away, but i guess that would be really unsatisfactory so mabye not.
Re: The 'REAL' Ending?
I agree with RavenIsDonkeyKong! I would have been REEEEEEAAAHHHHHLLLLLLYYY upset if Carlos would have died. It wouldn't have made any sense. But, if Nicole had died, I could understand that. I agree with someone who said earlier that she could have killed herself, thinking it was best for Carlos. I'm just happy that ended up together. It was cute!!! i love this movie!
Re: The 'REAL' Ending?
The Ending was happy but if you want it to be sadder then you can just imagine him dying one week after she tells us the last voiceover? :P
Re: The 'REAL' Ending?
I have to say that yes, come to think of it, the ending does seem somewhat displaced. I'm going to go out on a limb here and say it's not necessarily the ending as it is that's the problem, but rather that the rest of the movie doesn't set it up properly in terms of emotional catharsism or tone. Overall, the writing wasn't the best I've ever seen, and especially the voice overs (but quite of few of the more lovey-dovey scenes as well) were very awkwardly written, slightly cheesy almost. The rest of the film had such a gritty realism, and the characters were so well rounded and shaped, the story itself held so much resonance in real life but the ending was presented to us in that almost cheesy way that seemed not to match the realism of the bulk of the movie.
I do think they should've ended up together, but I don't think the end voice over or the 'pilot nunez' sequence should've been in there. Maybe end it after "You were so there" in the car.

Re: The 'REAL' Ending?
But really, how is the ending not realistic? I'm sure for ever 20 couples that ends in death or destruction there's a couple that ends in happiness. For every 50 druggies that od or leaves their family there's bound to be at least one that gets past it. I know people who have had a ROUGH life and yet they came out of it and got their life together. You could say the ending is cliche, butit really depends on the point the movie is trying to make. Sometimes happy endings don't fit, and I agree, but I didn't mind this one so much.
Plus, movies can't always be 100% realistic.

I too would've been pissed. I think CB really is a positive story with some turbulence that gives it character, a bad ending would not match the rest. I know it wasn't executed very good but let's put it this way: I wouldn't have liked CB so much if it had a tragic ending, so it really works for me.

Re: The 'REAL' Ending?
because why? Because he's a Hispanic guy who doesn't want to become a mechanic, dope dealer or car thief?
I believe Carlos's character is really unrealistic
The movie is unrealistic, because both characters are 17 years old and sometimes have the maturity of 40 year olds, sometimes of 17 year olds, but that aside there's nothing *hugely* inconsistent about the characters.
Re: The 'REAL' Ending?
i think well first wow that class your taking sounds so cool and fun i wish my college had it and second as someone mentioned before me the ending of them not ending up together is very Hollywood, i personally have wasted to much time watching movies were the characters don't end up together and at the end your like what was the point, for example little children they should have run off together, all the pretty horses, the good girl and for once i wish someone would make a version of romeo and Juliet were they live and stay together that would be cool.i know the directors are trying to prove a moral point like with little children but hey its just a movie give us the crazy ending. on a lighter note i really love crazy beautiful and the ending included i gives you hope and it shows you that he saved her its romantic and plus i love Los Angeles especially Santa Monica and they show so much so it reminds me of the good times i had in Los Angeles.
Re: The 'REAL' Ending?
in the commentary the director says that Carlos was supposed to die.
Re: The 'REAL' Ending?
They should have filmed the director's version :(
it sounds way better than the original

Re: The 'REAL' Ending?
I usually like movies that have depressing or weird endings, but I'm glad this one ended up happy. It showed that a messed up girl really can turn things around and become responsible and Carlos was a good guy so I would hate to see him die in the end.
Re: The 'REAL' Ending?
Disagree. He was distracted by his new relationship (who hasn't been there?!), feeling frustrated by a couple of incidents, and had a couple of slips in discipline. Nothing serious at all (and certainly not "just like Nicole").
Nicole is a destructive and rebelious child [] Carlos is [an] organized [] gentlemen and meets Nicole which changes his life and attitude toward his friends and even his mother. He was becoming a rebel just like Nicole
Nicole on the other hand, once she met Carlos, calmed w-a-a-a-a-y down. When her father told him all about her behaviour it came as a shock to him, he had not seen any of that.
So in fact I believe that he always was the steadying influence she always needed, but it took the party / police incident and their running away together to make them both realise it. But having done so they realised "in the cold light of morning" as it were, that they had to face their situation and deal with it. Which they did, blah blah blah, happily ever after, yada yada yada, what's wrong with a happy ending. I liked it.
Re: The 'REAL' Ending?
Great metaphoric observation: "in the cold light of morning"
I didn't pick that up while watching the movie, and it's so true.
thanks!

Re: The 'REAL' Ending?
I'm in the middle on this one. Carlos dying would have been an awful ending. Nicole killing herself would have also been awful. However, I did feel like the ending was way too sappy. The girl was clearly messed up and not just a spoiled rich girl, she should have been sent to some kind of clinic, maybe not in Utah, but somewhere nearby in Los Angeles where her father and Carlos could have seen her regularly. She did seem like she was determined at the end to be a better person.
Re: The 'REAL' Ending?
Um, if I rememeber correctly her mother did NOT commit suicide, but resides in Virgina where she has remarried a Dermatologist who is home from work every night by 6, unlike her Dad who was working and politicking 24/7. (that's almost word for word how she describes it to carlos, on her bed in her room) He mentions that his dad left when he was 5, couldn't cut it in the US so he headed back to Mexico.

Re: The 'REAL' Ending?
Later in the filmn, her father tells Carlos that Nicole's mother killed herself and Nicole saw her lying in the bed. Nicole also mentions seeing her mother and believing her to be asleep and in bed all day.
Re: The 'REAL' Ending?
Her mother killed herself, were you not paying attention when her father gave the whole speach to Carlos too stay away from her. Then again at the end when she starts to decide to change she tells Carlos the "real" way her mother died, she was a suicide.
Re: The 'REAL' Ending?
I actually don't think a dark ending is appropriate.. though I think the ending was a bit rushed. Probably they wanted to shot a happy ending.
I guess it's a good thing Disney modified the ending though I prefer a hanging end.
Something for the spectators imagination.

Re: The 'REAL' Ending?
The Disney ending is incomplete because it doesn't tackle the ugliness of Nicole's craziness. The movie, as it stands, implies that Carlos completes her perfectly. That without Carlos she becomes a wreck; and that with Carlos she is beautiful. Craziness is not so simple in reality.
Carlos has to give up something for the ending to worknot just pretend to like in the movie. He can either give up Nicole, who then kills herself. Just like her mom did when the senator distanced himself with his work. Or Carlos can give up becoming a pilot and betray the dreams of his mother/family.
The entire movie sets up the dilemma. The Disney ending is that love eventually fixes all. The real ending is that love comes with a price.

I completely agree. I am a Pilot myself and before I went abroad for nearly two years to get trained I had a relationship with a girl that was vaugely similar to the one in this movie albeit with a lot less of the drama.
Anyways like you said a point came where I really had to decide - the girl or the career. I chose the career although sometimes I still think of the girl even though it is a long time ago now and I hear she has since settled down with someone else.
So I think in this kind of situation you really can't have it both ways.but hay, it's a movie and I actually like how this one ends even though I know it is not really true to life.

Re: The 'REAL' Ending?
This movie was a tearjerker without any of the main characters dying. It would have been over-the-top dramatic if either of them died, I think.
Re: The 'REAL' Ending?
^^^^ I agree. The movie was already dark and depressing. The characters went through so much turmoil, I think they all deserved a happy ending.

Re: The 'REAL' Ending?
but it's not 'dark and depressing' when everyone gets everything they want, in the end It's just bad times, for a short while, and we all have to deal with that There's nothing particularly desolate about it, it just isn't a fairytale. If you're gonna include emotional disturbance as a theme, then follow it through and show people having to compromise a little, because of it.

Re: The 'REAL' Ending?
Bingo 'krypzzo' - the movie wants to have its cake and eat it, so the resolution doesn't come at any cost, whatsoever. I don't see what the point is of giving us 90 minutes of obstacles and clashes, if you're gonna tie everything up with a neat little bow at the end. This idealism really annoyed me, because the movie had shown genuine promise, beforehand.

Re: The 'REAL' Ending?
I think what the ending should have been was montage showing Nicole melting down over and over and Carlos walking off of his job each time (like he did when he was taking his exam and spaced out the appointment with her father) .. after the montage show Nicole pregnant living in a Trailer Park with 5 kids and Carlos flipping burgers with a tag line Love Conquers All
Roll credits..
That would sure fit the movie better..

The 'REAL' Ending?
Nicole is a destructive and rebelious child and for good reason too she saw her mother dead. If it was me I would get alittle crazy seeing my mother commit suicide.
Carlos is a organized and well thoughtout gentlemen and meets Nicole which changes his life and attitude toward his friends and even his mother. He was becoming a rebel just like Nicole.
Then the ending hits and they live happily ever after what is that crap? It doesnt make sense to me and later in our disscussions the professor said that the "Real" ending (meaning the one the director wanted) was changed by Disney who bought the script because the True ending was more intense then a simple happy ending. (Disney movie with a sad ending?! Blasphemy!)
The question is what was this "Real" ending, what did the director really want the ending of this movies to be? Any information on this will wonderful!
