Horror : Aren't the Message Boards best thing about IMDb?

The main reason many people love IMDb is to share their thoughts on certain topics, view, read or take part in discussions. We are not here just to rate movies or create lists. The best thing about IMDb are message boards, where we share different opinions, help people find movies, or understand movies. Screw the ratings, I can easily view them on RT, but I come here to read and discuss about movies, that's the beauty of IMDb. Shutting down message boards is mistake. People will have no real reason to come here except to rate films or add films to watchlist, but for what reason if they can't share that with other folks? Right?

I come here to discuss films I've seen, get questions answered, and get recommendations for future viewing. I owe over 80% of my 496 movie Netflix queue to this horror board! Sometimes that means I watch something awful, but for the most part, it opens up new doors to great films I hadn't known about otherwise.

Exactly. I come here to rate movies and make lists and write reviews but all of that doesn't even matter that much, I personally love coming to this board and just asking questions, or even just dropping by and seeing what all of you fine folk have been talking about.

I've been on the horror board since 2005 and am shocked by the news. It's a terrible decision which I hope will be repealed.

Yeah. Most of the information I get here comes from the boards. I often go to boards for upcoming movies to see what recent developments are.

There are a lot of trolls here, but its not difficult to ignore them. There are more people who are posting honest opinions or have interesting information to share.

I have no reason to believe that they won't disable the message boards throughout the entire site (going by their message), but I hope I'm wrong. Does anyone know for sure?

They are even shutting down the private message system. I think they are getting rid of everything.

I hope you're rightbut why the big announcement? Look at the numbers for most of the other boards, like anime - nobody uses them. But the horror board is a stand-alone, with tons of traffic

I always came here mainly for the message boards. It's hard to believe the boards are going after all these years.

Yep. My bookmark is not set to the IMDb home page. It's set to my message board profile. There's a reason for that.

Yes they are. It's not just genre boards like this, but the individual boards for people and projects where you can get useful information. The boards are easy to use, and posts aren't cluttered by large avatars and sidebars and large signatures like some boards.

A lot of people here seem to be particularly upset about the loss of the film-specific boards. There is a website called TMDB (https://www.themoviedb.org/talk) that I haven't seen mentioned here, but they recently added message boards for every specific movie and person (example: https://www.themoviedb.org/movie/149871-kaguyahime-no-monogatari You have to click on the little word bubble icon on the top left of the movie's page). Unfortunately, they are not very active, but a bunch of people from IMDb have already gathered at their general boards and and are discussing ways to increase activity and serve as an alternative to IMDb.

I encourage everyone to take a look at this site. I think it looks very promising. It's the only other site I know of with message boards for every movie, actor, director, etc.

I also encourage everyone to spread the word about this site, as it seems most people don't know about it.

They're fun to use to talk with others, but it needs a spam filter.

Don't give up the fight for truly independent cinema!
