Doctor Who : Capaldi, the most unpopular Doctor there will ever be ?

Capaldi, the most unpopular Doctor there will ever be ?

Even most hardcore DW fans stopped watching just a few episodes after Capaldi took over.

Can there ever be a less popular Doctor?

Re: Capaldi, the most unpopular Doctor there will ever be ?

Yes. Colin Baker

Nice trolling

And your proof of this is?

Let's roll some tits up the flagpole and see if anyone gets wood.

Re: Capaldi, the most unpopular Doctor there will ever be ?

Trolls don't need proof

Re: Capaldi, the most unpopular Doctor there will ever be ?

I've been a fan since 1980.

I stopped watching when they tried to make Davros DAVROS!!! into a sympathetic villain by somehow having the Doctor show up on Skaro without apparently realizing it knowing that he SHOULD NOT BE THERE and MUST NOT INTERFERE since that would alter countless timelines he'd already taken part in.

The stories were already annoying enough, but I simply could not forgive that much continuity-stomping in one episode.

I went back just to see Clara become the most important thing ever as the Doctor broke every rule in the book to save her while if anyone recalls, he WOULD NOT go back in time to a crashing ship to save Adric despite the fact that it would not have changed time at all had he done so. The ship still would have crashed. That continuity in the Time Laws was then thrown out for Moffat's darling Mary Sue, along with everything else. The Doctor then shoots a guy just for being in his way. This is the same Doctor that would NOT SHOOT either Rassilon or the Master for threatening the entirety of the universe.

So much BS in so little time. Forget 'the last straw', that was a whole broom's worth of crapola!

Re: Capaldi, the most unpopular Doctor there will ever be ?

Kay.

Doesn't answer my question.

Let's roll some tits up the flagpole and see if anyone gets wood.

Re: Capaldi, the most unpopular Doctor there will ever be ?

"Even most hardcore DW fans stopped watching just a few episodes after Capaldi took over."

I've been watching DOCTOR WHO since the 1970s - and I haven't stopped yet.

And although some of this serials aren't the best, Peter Capaldi is just fine as the Doctor.

"Can there ever be a less popular Doctor?"

Doctor Mengele?

Doctor Kevorkian?

Colin Baker?

Re: Capaldi, the most unpopular Doctor there will ever be ?

someone lives in an alternative universe where there is was no Colin Baker or Peter Davison.

And who might that be?

Which is why I'm so torn. These crap scripts. And some fans want the show to continue just for sake of "infinite possibilities".

Personally, I'd prefer to see a TV series finish on a high and at a logical time and place, rather then suffer from ever diminishing returns until it's finally cancelled.

Hey ant-mac, can you imagine if IMDB message boards were around when Horns of Nimon, or Twin Dilemma first aired?

I think I had a thread on that once.

I think I started a similar thread until Burun told me off for it.

Do you know what happens if you look in a mirror and repeat his name five times?

Re: Capaldi, the most unpopular Doctor there will ever be ?

I kinda liked the Horns of Nimon. The idea of the minotaur-like race feeding off entire worlds until they drained it dry and moved on was an interesting take on the concept. They would seduce someone on the new planet with promises of power and weasel their way in that way, rather than simply being overt invaders.

It certainly could have been done better but really, they had a tiny lil budget to work with.

The Twin Dilemma again, the monster concept was an interesting thing and meeting one of the Doctor's old acquaintances who was coerced into helping the monster via deception were stronger elements in a story that just didn't come together well.

Re: Capaldi, the most unpopular Doctor there will ever be ?

"Hey ant-mac, can you imagine if IMDB message boards were around when Horns of Nimon, or Twin Dilemma first aired?"

They would have been pretty quiet, because almost no one had a home computer and practically no one would have been able to afford one

However, I'm pretty sure that THE BRAIN OF MORBIUS or THE DEADLY ASASSIN would have caused just as big an uproar. DOCTOR WHO fandom would have descended into civil war.

Much as it does now, every other day.

"I think I had a thread on that once."

Perhaps you can find it if you use the Wayback Machine - the internet's answer to the TARDIS.

Re: Capaldi, the most unpopular Doctor there will ever be ?

I always wondered why they didn't call that episode "The Mind of Morbius" you get that nice alliteration thing. It has a better ring to it. And it's a more comic-y styled title for a goofy comic-y style story.

Re: Capaldi, the most unpopular Doctor there will ever be ?

I think it's because they saw the brain and the mind as two different things.

The brain is a physical organ. The mind is what inhabits it.

In the story, Morbius was slowly losing his mind because his brain was cut off from the outside world and lacked stimuli.

ant-mac

Re: Capaldi, the most unpopular Doctor there will ever be ?

They could have called him Brian to get a different alliteration.

THE BRIAN OF MORBIUS?

Nah, it'd never work

Re: Capaldi, the most unpopular Doctor there will ever be ?

He was buried under juvenile, low brow dialogue and storylines he was a very basic actor with no skill.

Re: Capaldi, the most unpopular Doctor there will ever be ?

Capaldis the one who's bought hardcore fans back to the show. Everyone says he's the most like the classic doctors. There's one group of people he's unpopular with and that's the fan girl tumblr crowd and who cares about them

Re: Capaldi, the most unpopular Doctor there will ever be ?

Too grouchy in the role, too cold looking in the eyes. I've seen Capaldi in interviews and he is quite a warm friendly bloke but I never felt that came over in his acting. I guess some actors can be warm and charming and some can't.

Re: Capaldi, the most unpopular Doctor there will ever be ?

I can only take this comment as proof positive that you don't actually watch the show.

I'd say the reverse is true. Capaldi era who is like a twisted caricature of old who because its the show done how the tumblr crowd want it written.

Re: Capaldi, the most unpopular Doctor there will ever be ?

No, that's probably Eccleston.

Re: Capaldi, the most unpopular Doctor there will ever be ?

1. Colin Baker is by far the least popular Doctor. I don't think that's a stretch. Even his fans usually admit they're in the minority.

2. Personally, Capaldi is my favorite of the NuWho Doctors. I wasn't crazy about him at first, and if I had given up on him after a few episodes my opinion probably would have remained the same, but he's really grown on me.

Re: Capaldi, the most unpopular Doctor there will ever be ?

Colin's episodes had some of the poorest writing of all.

Sylvester's episodes were also mostly crap, but he had the benefit of appealing to fans of the occult with the witchcraft and sorcery and elder gods stuff. Writing-wise, though, they were laughable stories.

And, oh god, The Happiness Patrol is on the top of my Best of the Worst Doctor Who episode list. The Candyman is so gloriously campy and hilarious.

Re: Capaldi, the most unpopular Doctor there will ever be ?

I always thought that 7 and Ace had good chemistry and I still love stories like Rememberance of the Daleks and the happiness patrol.

Re: Capaldi, the most unpopular Doctor there will ever be ?

Yes he is and no it's likely there can't.

Re: Capaldi, the most unpopular Doctor there will ever be ?

EVER? Fool!
In my mind, Capaldi is my least fave of new who, and McGann my least fave of all

Re: Capaldi, the most unpopular Doctor there will ever be ?

B*llocks - There was a lot of love for Capaldi - just because you don't like him doesn't mean everyone has to be a small-minded as you.

Re: Capaldi, the most unpopular Doctor there will ever be ?

He's the only actor who could, and did, put me off watching Doctor Who. I wish him luck in his new ventures and excitedly await his departure. PS. Take Coleman with you, please.

Re: Capaldi, the most unpopular Doctor there will ever be ?

The problem wasn't Capaldi, it was the quality of the writing.

Re: Capaldi, the most unpopular Doctor there will ever be ?

I would say he is up on the list. I just don't think he makes for a good Doctor. I don't think he is a bad actor, but he just doesn't do well in the role. If anything. I feel like he would have made a better Valeyard.

I'd also like to say. I really wanted to see an older actor playing the Doctor, and I was really hyped when he got the role. It just hasn't worked out. I just hope this doesn't mean we only see actors in their 20's' or 30's get the role.

Re: Capaldi, the most unpopular Doctor there will ever be ?

Nooooo, not true! Capaldi is my favorite Doctor! I fell in love immediately :)

Yes, that's me in my profile picture.

Re: Capaldi, the most unpopular Doctor there will ever be ?

I think I'm correct in saying Capaldi is the only Doctor of Nu Who that had an episode beaten in the ratings by Casualty!

Oct 17, 2015

Last Saturday's episode (October 10) got an overnight rating of 4.38 million viewers losing, on the same night, to the low-budget medical soap Casualty (which got 4.42 million). Doctor Who's share of viewing, at 21.52 per cent, was lower even than the unremarkable game show Pointless Celebrities earlier that evening (which scored 21.60 per cent).

Epic fail, Peter!

Re: Capaldi, the most unpopular Doctor there will ever be ?

Thank you, I am impressed. I also would bet that every one of the Doctors are someone's favorite, and also some that consider them to be the worst.

Re: Capaldi, the most unpopular Doctor there will ever be ?

The REG Doctor doesn't have many fans.

Capaldi's by far my favorite Doctor of the revival series and I'm not sure if I'm going to continue watching the show or not

Re: Capaldi, the most unpopular Doctor there will ever be ?

I don't think so.
The most unpopular in terms of least-loved probably goes to the Sixth Doctor for being a bit too brash and overbearing. But I do want to add, I enjoy every incarnation of the Doctor, I'm just assuming what I believe is the consensus of the general population and how the Sixth Doctor exists in the consciousness of the public.

In terms of actually unpopular as in not as well known, goes to the Eighth Doctor. I don't think the general population knows/cares about Big Finish and he wasn't part of either show apart from a mini-episode. Even Capaldi left him out once when he was listing off all the names of the actors who have played the Doctor.

I would also like to say that I love Capaldi as the Doctor and he's almost tied for my overall favorite (Chris beats him by a smidge) Doctor.

Re: Capaldi, the most unpopular Doctor there will ever be ?

Yes, Tom Baker he was awful and quitter boy ecclestone was god awful too, actually now you mention it David Teninch was pretty crap.

River Song: Well, I was on my way to this gay Gypsy bar mitzvah for the disabled

Re: Capaldi, the most unpopular Doctor there will ever be ?

yes I hated Teninch! Now David Tennant, he was great!

Re: Capaldi, the most unpopular Doctor there will ever be ?

Nope.

I thought Capaldi was a vast improvement on the previous guy.

Re: Capaldi, the most unpopular Doctor there will ever be ?

I feel sorry for him, just as I do for Colin Baker and Sylvester McCoy the writing for them was almost entirely awful.

Even the best actor would be hard-pressed to do anything with terrible scripting.

Re: Capaldi, the most unpopular Doctor there will ever be ?

Sylvester's episodes were also mostly crap, but he had the benefit of appealing to fans of the occult with the witchcraft and sorcery and elder gods stuff. Writing-wise, though, they were laughable stories.
A have a cold at the moment. I can't stop sneezing your BS.

Re: Capaldi, the most unpopular Doctor there will ever be ?

No, it is just your personal opinion and a taste. I know a few hardcore fans (me included) who almost quit watching during Smiths era and returned because Peter was marvelous and returned a bit of an old charm back to Doctor that was lost. A classic touch. He was perfect, one of the best.
It is surely objective but there are many who would disagree with you.

Re: Capaldi, the most unpopular Doctor there will ever be ?

As being one of those fans who stopped watching for a long time just as Capaldi taken over, its has nothing to do with him. Always was planning to give him a chance and instantly adored him when finally did. The problem was a sliding scale of:
- 2010: Of cool Moffat has taken over! He wrote some great episodes, this is going to be so fantastic.
- S05: Hm. I'm still waiting for it to finally grab me.
- Christos Carol: Whew! That was good. Moff has finally hit his stride.
- S06: It takes me a week to suffer through each individual episode because I keep turning it off. But he was my favorite Right? Should keep faith and march on.
- S07a: We are going to have a new companion! New hope! I'll just binge watch the rest of Amy, Rory for posterity.
- S07b: 50th! And one of my favorite Doctors I never thought to see again is back! Must watch the rest of this drivel even if it makes me cringe, in comparison of groaning into a facepalm of S05-7b.
- 50th. Liked more because of watching online with the rest of fans.
- fell asleep in the middle of Time of the Doctor, because liking the last times experience watched live broadcast online too. Took 2 years to bother and watch the missed middle, but it was with other fans, dubbed and I didn't even care.
- pre S08: Whaaat?! Moffat?! Still?! No one helping him to write at least some characterization, for females at least? No I can't. Still physically ill from binge watching S07. :( I'll get it and keep near when I'm ready, shame about being unfair to the new Doctor though.

Seen it after year and a half. But it was mostly thanks wonderful people at DeviantArt and a wonderfully done video of Missy, with what seemed to me pocking at a Mary Sue and the Doctor being horrified and resolved at his fate because pf the Author's cruel will. So at least the worst potential surprise has been made safe because of the power of laughter.
- Was relieved and surprised to enjoy DW again in S08. Plus a brilliant headcanon I've encountered to defuse Kill the Moon, helped. ADORED Capaldi. Finally liked Clara, no as a person maybe, but she was much more real there.
- S09 was to S07, as Clom to Raxacoricofallapatorious. Capaldi was even better there, but he alone could not make the rest watchable. Clara - epic fail!

Love Capaldi as the Doctor and greatly saddened for his departure. I don't have THE favorite Doctor, its too crowded at the top, but Twelve is right up there. And just to spite second poster Colin Baker is there too, his array of different performances as the Sixth Doctor at Big Finish are just too lovely and amazing not to love the guy. :) I really wish they buy the Twelfth license soon. Just not with Clara. For a while at least. Maybe she can come back with an earlier Doctor as a shard!Clara. NO Lady Me one. Please no. Not for 5 years in the very least to let the wounds scab over a little and not unless the stories are just to good not to tell and can not be made with some other characters. Jenna Coleman can come back as NOT Clara any time, shes a good actress, or can be, not entirely her fault.

I'm a time traveler, I point and laugh at archaeologists.

Re: Capaldi, the most unpopular Doctor there will ever be ?

the most unpopular Doctor will always be the current one.

Take them to the security kitchen!
