Love with the Proper Stranger : very underrated movie…

very underrated movie…

they are perfect together and like Notorious with Grant and Bergman..neither was better looking in any of their other films.

the script is not over the topjust perfectly reflects their personalities and styles..it is so sad and depressing a topic and yet so beautiful a love story..its easily in my top 25 pick..

if you have not seen it see it.

to know that they are both gone now..very sad.

Re: very underrated movie…

I totally agree with you! This is actually my favorite movie of all time.

Re: very underrated movie…

wonderful !

I recommended the movie to someone the other day and they had never heard of it and I do not know if they knew who Natalie Wood was . makes me shudder!

Re: very underrated movie…

Agreed! :(

Re: very underrated movie…

Totally disagree. This movie is so overrated and now dated. Were they fixing movies back then also for Oscar nominations. This movie is really boring and Mqueen seems out of place and really amateurish. Was he believing his press clippings this early on. He seems like such a shiftless flakey no charisma reading teleprompter lines actor.

Re: very underrated movie…

joeo is nuts! This movie was considered an indie film back in the day and it was marvelous. It is horrifically underrated and was robbed at the academy awards

Heath Ledger Come Back,
This isn't funny at all.

Re: very underrated movie…

now is this movie considered dated? beyond being a black and white film (which alas to some is dated) the relationship and characters and dialog is recognizable to anyone today the only thing dated is the abortion scene and scenes since it was illegal then but dated I am missing that.

if you are used to Steve McQueen in Bullitt or driving about on a motorcycle or in a prison campmaybe this one is not you cup of tea.

this is actually a great movie Natalie trying to be a contemporary woman while being very vulnerable is quite believable and in my view, one of her best roles. Steve McQueen is surprised by the fact that he fell in love while still trying not to be the guy doesn't fall in love.

great one.

Re: very underrated movie…

I totally agree, it's one of the best and the most beautiful movies I've ever seen, one of my faves of all the times! Definitely ma fave Natalie Wood and Steve McQueen, too film ever! They were perfect! And I think that Natalie should win the Oscar for it!

She is just AMAZING in it!

Viva Bardot!

Re: very underrated movie…

I've loved movies since the early '50s, and I somehow managed to miss this one until today. Well, ignorance finally ends in bliss. What a marvelous movie!

Spoilers ahead. I'm sure enough has been said about how wonderful both Wood and McQueen areeverybody else in the film, too. Neither lead actor was ever this natural and winning. But I want to say something about Robert Mulligan, and maybe Alan J. Pakula. Whoever made the decision to allow so much silence in this film was close to genius. I first noticed in the furniture store, when the two have escaped her brothers. There are three long silences at least a half minute long, while Angie and Rocky think and feel about what they've said and what is happening to them. The expressions on both faces are minimal but very moving. In fact, I think that it's in this scene that the seeds of love are planted in each of them. The silences continue when she is asleep in his girlfriend's apartment, when she has him to her new apartment for dinner, and elsewhere. Almost the entire scene in the abortion apartment was improvised. Except for the Italian family scenes, the whole thing is understated, and I think this aspect of the film shows great belief in the actors and the story, and great courage. And that's how Mulligan got the best out of both of them.

I have a different way of rating movies. How on earth can On the Waterfront, West Side Story, Vertigo, and The Philadelphia Story be rated on a single scale? Each is a masterpiece in its genre and can only be compared to similar films. Love with the Proper Stranger is in its own genre: gritty, heartbreaking, and romantic. I've given it a nine, will watch it againand probably againand might raise that score. What other film like this one, if there is one, is as fine?

Re: very underrated movie…

Yep, no idea why. I suppose because there were both in so many other movies

Butit is one of my favorite films of all time, and in my opinion, one of the best romantic comedies of all time.

Re: very underrated movie…

It's a great film, but it does go a bit downhill in the past 20 minutes. During those final 20 minutes, I was beginning to wonder how many times any of the characters were going to say that they're fine. Otherwise, it's a lovely story.
