Re: The Submarine

According to my aunt, who is from Belarus, the name of the sub is something along the lines of "octopus". Pretty funny.

Re: The Submarine

The name of the submarine is 'sprut', it's translated as a big octopus or squid.
The russian is quite good, especially for actors who are not native speakers.

Re: The Submarine

Actually Arkin is part Russian jew and Ted Bikel, who played the Russian captain, speaks many laguages. He played a Russian on Star Trek SNG as Worf's adopted father. I think they may have used some real Russian speaking actors as certain members of the crew.

Re: The Submarine

The Cyrillic spelled name has its characters CIIPYT (named Es, Pe, Er, U and Te)transcribed into the corresponding English spelling of SPRUT and pronounced Sproot. It means Octopus in Russian. BTW the two side by side I's are meant to represent the single Cyrillic character Pe which looks like two I's that have their top crosses attached. (Tried cut & paste with actual Cyrillic characters but it wouldn't work)
