Books : Goodreads Group
Re: Goodreads Group
I somehow never have gone to Goodreads very much, but I will now, and I'll join your group. It would be great if we all went there and were able to keep posting among the others we've come to know here on this board.
Re: Goodreads Group
I just posted at GoodreadS to join your group.
Re: Goodreads Group
Since I'm already on Goodreads, I guess I will join.
Re: Goodreads Group

Can you give us the link? I'm not a Goodreads member but I might join if motivated.

OK thanks very much Dan. I'll see if the spirit moves me. I'm not sure how things work there.

By the way, don't most people on Goodreads use their real names? I always thought that was usually how it worked. But most folks on that board are using handles. What is the norm?

Re: Goodreads Group
I use my real name, but there is no requirement that people do so and a decent number use handles.
I would say the majority go by their real names though.

Re: Goodreads Group
I joined using a handle "Prelude" to echo my IMDb name, so that other IMDb Books people will instantly know it's me, from here.
I too had never previously been a member of Goodreads, but joining last night, I realized it will also be a fun place in general I didn't realize what it was like there. I've visited to read reviews but I also found that, like here, a user can organize lists of their favorite books, rate, create a "want to read this" list, etc.
Not everyone wants to do those things I'm sure, but I found it rather fun once I got there. I'm glad I joined, and it will be nice to be in Dan's group and still get to see folks from here.

Re: Goodreads Group

Yeah, that's kind of the dilemma for me though. I've been thinking for some time to join GR, under my real name (like I do on social media etc.), so people who know me as that can find me, and so on. I also thought it would be nicer to organize and rate books under my own name.
Now I don't know which to do: use my IMDB handle so this crew can recognize me, or use my real name so other friends or researchers can find me. Since I'm a bit of an author, I figured real name would be better but now I don't know.
The internet conundrum.
I guess the next question is: Can one change one's handle at some point if one wishes (like on other sites)?

Re: Goodreads Group
That is a conundrum; I see your situation.
I wonder if it's possible to have two accounts there? I have no idea if that is workable. Perhaps joining twice by using two e-mail accounts, that might work?
As for changing handles similar to here, you probably can change to a different one, but it would probably automatically read across your presence on Goodreads, so if you were angelofvic posting on the IMdb Group page one day, then changed your name to your real name the next so that you can post other things elsewhere on the site, probably your IMDb Group posts would suddenly have your real name on them too.
I think I would try using a second e-mail account to create two Goodreads accounts, and see if that is possible.

Yeah, I was wondering the same thing, whether it is possible to have two accounts there.
Trying to do that with two different email addresses might indeed help.

Re: Goodreads Group
You could always register as Real name (aka angelofvic) and then drop the aka over time as people adjust.
If you decide you want to use some of the cataloging/reviewing/etc. features that are core features of Goodreads, trying to duplicate it across two accounts might be cumbersome.

Well, the IMDB message board part would only be for chatting, so I don't think that would affect me.
What would affect me is not preserving my anonymity in a particular group where anonymity (at least for women) might be recommended for some.

Re: Goodreads Group
Well that is it then, this post finally proves it- the IMBD Board experience is completely over- it is now totally fractured just like Amazon intended! Bully for you.

Re: Goodreads Group
I am sorry that my creation of this group seems to bother you so much. It wasn't my intent to step on anyone's toes who has thrown in with any of the alternative IMBd migration boards. I wish them all luck and will likely decide to join one of them myself within the next week or so.
I just sort of figured that all of them are really just start ups and given the nature of the beast could disappear as quickly as they popped up. (Whereas I am pretty sure that Goodreads will be around a year from now.). So I figured it must serve as a decent fallback alternative for those of us that interested in continuing to engage each other about books and reading.
Again, my apologies if this rubs you wrong, and best of luck to you on Reddit or IMDb v.2 or wherever you land.

Re: Goodreads Group
Hey Dan, it is a free country after-all, it is just that GoodReads is GoodReads and has nothing to do with these IMBD Boards which are more than movie and books discussions. What made these Books board unique was the small but diverse groups that wandered in and out of it from other topics.
The problem with setting up a splintered group from another website is that it almost never works, years ago- Amazon Forums had a Rock'in group of people on their music and gaming boards then Amazon came down all heavy and people decided to flee to other sites.some tried to bring the group over then it just peter'd right out. Because if everyone wanted just a gaming site- they would of already just been there.
once again: http://imdb2.freeforums.net/thread/94/reading-february-2017
Although there is no reason why there can't be more than one alternative.
I just want everyone to be happy like in the old IMBD days :)
(no,,,,,there's just something in my eye's..that better).
see ya.

Re: Goodreads Group
Dan, don't take those comments too personally; I think a lot of people are just feeling generally hurt by the loss of IMDb's boards, and he makes a good point about how sad it is that a splintering effect will happen with all the various new boards.
However, many of us are still glad there are other places, new or old; and I'm joining as many as I can.
I'm glad there are the other places plus your group on Goodreads the splinter effect is a pity but it's far better than everyone on IMDb losing each other altogether. We may all be scattered but in joining a lot of these alternatives, we can at least hang onto much of our community, and that's the main thing.
Thanks for making the Goodreads group it's also the first time I joined Goodreads and I'm actually quite pleased, as I discovered how fun it is to have an account there.
Sadly it's also an Amazon site! But we do what we can.

Re: Goodreads Group
True, Amazon just pulled the rug right out from everyone on this site, and unfortunately they own GoodReads.
I will admit that Goodreads does have the best format.

Wow good to see IMDB 2 has over 7,000 posts already! I joined; it's good to know that perhaps our communities here won't have to lose each other after all.

Great! When this site finally sinks IMB2 should hopefully become the natural sanctuary for everyone still lingering on here.

I just got out of the hospital a few hours ago (a bad case of influenza that aggravated by COPD) or I'd already have posted what you said, that Amazon owns GoodReads.

Re: Goodreads Group
That's why I do most of my online book shopping at B&N. With a $25 annual membership, I get free shipping however small my purchase, and in-store purchases give me 10% off in addition to any promotional discount. Plus, I get frequent (too frequent for my budget!) email coupons that give me (usually 20%) discounts on top of everything else.
Unfortunately, I find B&N much weaker than Amazon on video, but any more I don't buy that much video anyway.
I do loads of shopping in local brick-and-mortar used book stores, but I do use ABE quite frequently best used-book portal on the internet, but, unfortunately, Amazon owned!.

Re: Goodreads Group
I buy from both online. There is no Barnes & Noble brick and mortar store near me now. I used to love the little book stores, my favorite "big" book store was was Kroch's and Bretano's when I lived in the Chicago area, that was a privately owned chain in the beginning.
I buy used books only when I'm trying out an author or the book is out of print because an author makes no money on the sale of used books. Most authors can no longer make a living on their writing nowadays.

Re: Goodreads Group
A very great deal of the books I buy are out-of-print, probably even the vast majority. And I mean, out-of-print oftentimes by decades or more, not just months.

Re: Goodreads Group
I guess that makes sense because you can always go to the library for the newly published books. I'm not a big fan of the local library, I like to take my time and browse but it seems like whenever I go to the local library, its full of screaming kids running all over the place. Its more like a day care center for kids too young for school.

Re: Goodreads Group
Actually, I've got bibliomania. I go to B&N for the latest books. Sometimes online, sometimes brick-and-mortar, cuz I do like to give the b&m stores some boost even if they cost a bit more.

I started out buying books online from B&N. For me their site was much easier to navigate. I had a hard time understanding amazon's site. Now that I have more experience with amazon I never look at B&N. I do shop at abe a little. I have used half.com in the past

Re: Goodreads Group
I love Barnes and Noble (also have a membership). We have a pretty nice one here. It's 2 stories and has a used books section. It also has this really nice cozy atmosphere so it doesn't feel like your in a store. I used to go there all the time, but then I realized that the books tended to be cheaper if you bought them through the website. I have gotten some good deals combining their coupons with their online offers. Now I only really go in there to check the used books and pick up Simpsons comics.
I also get a lot of books at Goodwill (it's the only other place around here that I know of that sells used books) and through eBay.
However, I won't stop shopping with Amazon. Barnes and Noble tends to be over priced in the TV and movie department. And there are some stuff you just can't get anywhere but at Amazon, like the Made on Demand stuff.

Re: Goodreads Group
I miss Barnes & Noble I switched countries and it doesn't exist here. But I was there all the time.
I also like Half Price Books.
Now, I buy mostly from two sources, a local charity bookstore which has both new and used, andAmazon!
But I really, really don't want to buy from Amazon anymore. I'm just sick of that company and this was the last straw.
At best I'm going to limit my resorting to Amazon, severely.

Goodreads Group
So I have gone ahead and created one called IMDB books board. If people want to join, feel free. Whether the conversation migrates over there or somewhere else is less important to me than providing a spot for the frequent (or infrequent) contributors of the Books board to stay in touch if they care to do so.
I am the current moderator and willing to run it; but, if someone else has an interest in doing so, I would be happy to hand it over. I just figured that if we all waited to long too create something like this, the IMBd boards might close down before before there was time to get the word out.
