The Brady Bunch : Watching "Try, Try, Again" now…..
Re: Watching "Try, Try, Again" now…..
Or maybe she liked painting and they found a way to work it into the plot?
Either way would be cool.

Re: Watching 'Try, Try, Again' now…..
In Barry William's book he said something about how the kids did most of their own artwork/signage on the show. Maybe Eve Plumb loved to paint as a child and it was encouraged on set.
Re: Watching 'Try, Try, Again' now…..
To a casual viewer, Jan's comments throughout the episode, "there will be no next time", sounds like she plans on killing herself.
Re: Watching 'Try, Try, Again' now…..
Marcia was probably secretly encouraging that kind of thinking.
Re: Watching 'Try, Try, Again' now…..
I heard that Marcia encouraged Jan to play Metallica albums backwards.
Re: Watching 'Try, Try, Again' now…..
Careful Marcia, Jan will marry better than you. She marries a professor. And you'll mary a guy who can't keep a job.

It was listening to Judas Priest backwards that allegedly drove two fans to suicide. Please click on http://ultimateclassicrock.com/judas-priest-suicide/
Re: Watching "Try, Try, Again" now…..
I am glad Oliver wrecked that painting Jan did of Cindy in the "Welcome Aboard" episode. It was really bad.
Re: Watching "Try, Try, Again" now…..
The series incorporated the kids' real life interests into their Brady counterparts. Jan with the painting is one example. Jan was a fan of Paul Newman, as was Eve in real life. Barry was really in to music and surfing, so Greg was a surfer and musician.
From Williams' book, I remember him talking about how all the kids were pretty much like their characters, with the exception of Cindy/Susan Olsen. He said that Susan was the "anti-Cindy." Susan herself has stated that she was embarrassed by some of the lines they gave to Cindy, as she felt Cindy came off as severely lacking in intellectual functioning.

the only thing that was really bad was the mouth overlapping the edges of the face. and the largeness of the lips.
but in the general scheme of things the style seems to be similar to many of the paintings done of that time

and I guess anything I better than the latest rage at that time

Reading the paper can really be depressing. Mr. Dithers fired Dagwood again.

Re: Watching "Try, Try, Again" now…..
It was funny though the way Oliver wrecked the painting.
Re: Watching "Try, Try, Again" now…..
This episode, as well as several others, taught a horrible lesson that if you don't show incredible talent in something off the bat, you should just quit. Peter isn't that good at fixing bikes. He's fired, not mentored. Bobby stinks at the drums. It takes years to learn. Jan tries 5 different things and stinks on her first try so she moves onto something else.
Re: Watching "Try, Try, Again" now…..
thank you! and to be honest, painting is a very hard thing to pick up and hone in on. and painting faces to look realistic??? FORGET IT! I thought she did an okay job, considering it was a face. and her style was quite seventies, so her style was right in her own era.
to be honest, Peter WAS good at fixing bikes. he was just 'too slow' which made me want to slap the owner of the shop for firing him. do you want it done FAST or do you want it done RIGHT???

I wanted to slap the owner because he didn't coach Peter on how to do the job. He threw Peter on the job and then sat back and complained. Peter did what Peter thought he should do, and he showed incredible enthusiasm in his work. Most kids would have done the bare minimum (if that) just to get the job done so they could goof around.

I never thought about that, but you're right. That does seem to be a recurring theme. The episode with Bobby and the drums always bugged me. Who buys their kids full drum sets and then just turns them loose on them without one single lesson??
Or if you made the varsity football team, but your mother thinks you could get hurt, then you need to quit.

That episode is very hard for me to watch. I so desperately wanted to play football in high school but my mom thought I would get hurt and wouldn't allow it. When Mike coaxed Carol to let Greg play, I found myself angry at my father for not championing my cause. And I want to yell at Greg when he's okay to be the team photographer, despite a little boo-boo.
Truth be told, our neighbor was the football coach and I did become a 'student assistant' (i.e. manager), but he let me QB the scout team offense. I didn't suit up, but I ran the wishbone in practice for his defense.
Re: Watching "Try, Try, Again" now…..
I guess you could be glad that your father didn't stop at nothing to get you ONTO THE TEAM

Re: Watching "Try, Try, Again" now…..
I developed my dislike fot the dance teacher from that episode. That woman was a heel and a lousy businesswoman.
Re: Watching "Try, Try, Again" now…..
She certainly was. Jan wasn't even that far off from the other girls in the class.
Re: Watching "Try, Try, Again" now…..
Re: Watching "Try, Try, Again" now…..
I thought Jan looked gorgeous in that episode. Eve Plumb rocked her closeups.
Re: Watching "Try, Try, Again" now…..
There is an episode that she is drawing in. She is sitting at her desk. Didn't want you to think I meant when she draws when they have the measles/mumps something like that. At least I think she is drawing. I want to say the episode where Peter is recording them, but can't remember.
