Death in Paradise : Don't like the new boss cop - Kris Marshall

Don't like the new boss cop - Kris Marshall

Yes, he's a brilliant cop, just like the first one, but he's so goofy/klutzy at times, it's now become annoying. I truly hope they don't hook him and Camille up, that would be a HUGE mistake. I don't even find him that great an actor. When they show him writing notes on his stupid piece of scrap paper he doesn't even act well enough to really make it look like he's actually writing something.

Have you watched the entire season 3?

Re: Don't like the new boss cop - Kris Marshall

I've only seen S1 through S3, but I like the new boss. I was unsure at first, knowing him only from My Family, but I think it was a good choice. I like how he's just as much of a fish out of water as the old boss, but how he actually appreciates the island and it's customs and cuisine, etc.

I've seen S1 - S4 and feel exactly the same way about him. Plus he's just such a sweetie (for example when he's trying to comfort Camille over her father's bombshell).

I loved the Richard Poole character but going back to S1 now is a bit of a shock. DI Poole really can be quite unpleasantly narrow minded.

Re: Don't like the new boss cop - Kris Marshall

I posted this elsewhere on this board, but I agree. His goofiness is over the top. They did this to Monk also. By the end of that series, he had become a caricature of himself.

Re: Don't like the new boss cop - Kris Marshall

Yes Sash, well said, it's almost painful to watch him at times. I still love the show though.

New boss cop, Goodman, is great

Gotta take issue with folks here who are saying they don't like DI Goodman and prefer the old one, Richard Poole. Sorry, but I usually cringed whenever Ben Miller was on screen. He was soooo uptight!

Goodman, played by Kris Marshall, is clumsy and sometimes accident prone, but I love his way of deducing the identity of the killer in each case. Goodman is always a gentleman, and reminds me sometimes of some of the Hercule Poirot mysteries. Goodman, like Poirot, is always a step ahead of whoever is working for "the other side" meaning, of course, the killer(s). And he is strictly a gentleman.

But the principal reason why I like this show is because of the beautiful main female character. In the beginning, we had Sara Martins as Camille, the Detective Sergeant who accompanied Poole on his quests for clues. Frankly, I didn't like her. Camille was never what I consider "feminine." She was a tough broad who didn't take any nonsense from anybody. Too tough to be called feminine.

Her replacement, Josephine Jobert as Florence, is Camille's polar opposite. Florence is almost as sharp a detective as her boss is, and her beauty far surpasses her predecessor's. She is beautiful where Camille was simply tough. There is no comparing the two women .

Besides, Florence has great-looking legs, and on a Caribbean island where most people wear shorts every day, a pair of nice legs is a blessing.

Cheers,
Dan

Re: New boss cop, Goodman, is great

My thoughts are, the brits liking to kill their main caracters (Strike Back, Doctor Who in some extend, etc), we've gotta go with the flow. Once you accept it, that's a fair trade.
The good thing is, it somehwat renews the show.

Of course, Poole and Goodman ARE different. Luckily enough. I would hate to see Marshall trying to do the same routine as Miller.

Even if that doesn't apply here, it adds a bit of suspens everytime a caracter is menaced or threatened

As for me, I like the Poole a lot. I had troubles when Goodman stept in, yet it went well as soon as the second episode was over :)
One thing though. As a french, I miss Poole's spikes, jokes and remarks about french culture and french people.

Re: New boss cop, Goodman, is great

How do you get to like a post, because I have to agree with all that has been posted here. (Except the God Bless America bit, being from Gods Own Country UK).

Re: Don't like the new boss cop - Kris Marshall

I don't like him either, admittedly I've only see 6 episodes with him in so far, but I'm not optimistic my opinion will change. He's not a eccentric enough to be likable and his geekiness isn't endearing, it's just annoying. It's a good job I love the other characters or I'd give up on it.

"The dwarf lives, until we find a cock merchant!" Best. Line. Ever.

Re: Don't like the new boss cop - Kris Marshall

Agreed, very annoying.

Re: Don't like the new boss cop - Kris Marshall

Loved Poole, love Humphrey, love Dwayne, really miss Fidel but it seems as though there's a problem getting a DS who can act. Both Camille and Florence are lovely but they just can't act.

Re: Don't like the new boss cop - Kris Marshall

Yes, his acting is truly abysmal. Lines are delivered in such a clunky manner it's as though he is trying to cue himself in all the time. The big reveal at the end where he announces the killer is given with all the panache of an overacted school play, seemingly to embarrass a confession from the culprit

Re: Don't like the new boss cop - Kris Marshall

seemingly to embarrass a confession from the culprit

I went through the process of setting up an account just to tell you how funny I find that line.
I am a fan of both DI Goodman and Poole.

Re: Don't like the new boss cop - Kris Marshall

I like him. I still miss the first actor. But this guy is great, in a different way.

Don't know that I'm sensing any chemistry between him and Camille, like w/Poole, though. It's early yet, though. I just started watching episodes w/the new guy.

Re: Don't like the new boss cop - Kris Marshall

I agree - I don't care for Marshall in this role, either. He acts like a 13 yr old around Camille, mooning about and unsure of himself. While this may be chalked up to the writing, the acting makes it even worse. This entire sub plot has made watching the show very tedious as it drags down the dynamic of the main story and I think it's unnecessary to have a romantic angle. Camille isn't even that appealing. When he solves the case, it's rather unbelievable to me because I'm stuck with this image of a clumsy, fumbling, boy as the supposed infallible "brainy boss." I'm currently watching Season 4 and don't know if I'll continue with it, unless they switch to another actor in the lead role.

A critic will point out your failings. An enemy will never tell you what you are doing wrong.

Re: I DO like the new boss cop - Kris Marshall

While I agree with you that the Humphrey/Camille combo was offputting, I feel much relieved now that Florence (Josephine Jobert) is the team's new Detective Sergeant. Florence is much, much nicer than Camille, who was in my opinion somewhat butch. I could actually see a possible romance developing with Humphrey and Florence but not now, not yet. Maybe later.

Cheers,
Dan

Re: I DO like the new boss cop - Kris Marshall

I have to agree with you. I started watching this show from Season 4, and then went to Season 1 forward. Ben Miller isn't much more compelling an actor than Marshall. That is to say, that Marshall is as good as Miller. For me, the writing is what is terrible, for a murder mystery show. I also think it's meant to be that way, in order to keep the show 'light'. It's not Agatha Christie.

Re: I DO like the new boss cop - Kris Marshall

I'm not sure, but I had the feeling that she's really starting to like him, but that she's not quite aware yet of how much she likes him. And he feels comfortable around her. It could be a friendship growing out to be more?

That said, I don't have the NEED for a romantic relationship between male and female characters. I would have no objections whatsoever, if they remained colleagues who just get along great and support each other. In fact I'd appreciate that over yet another "romance". It's been done too often.
