I wasn't convertedbut I will say that this place helped me form a better understanding of just about everything.
Re: With all this back and forth over the years, was anyone converted?
There were a number of atheists converted to Christianity.
[there are only two atheists on this board threatened enough by my statement that they will need to respond to it.]

I was converted from borderline Nazi to merely slightly conservative.
It is not enough that I succeed. Everyone else must fail.

I searched my Chx files to find this conversation we had in April, 2008. Most of these posters were ages 16-21 when they first started posting on the Pit. I haven't had contact with them in recent years. So I'm unsure if there have been any additional changes. I personally witnessed all these except for gilhon's.
1. LeonScottKennedy (formerly DanteThePilgrim) - former Fundamentalist Christian. Moved to atheism and later identified as apatheist.
2. gilhon - former Catholic. "Practically atheist now", he says.
3. deathofachilles - former Catholic who later identified as agnostic.
4. Caim - former JW then Buddhist.
5. JairStout - former Evangelical Christian then became a liberal Christian (Protestant).
6. NYCSubwayGuy (not sure about that name) - lapsed Catholic turned atheist who began attending church again because it made his wife happy and he said he felt comfortable there.
And you know the sun's settin' fast
And just like they say nothing good ever lasts

Well not a religious conversion, but I used to be fairly indifferent either way on the death penalty (but if pushed leaning towards "for") and after seeing the arguments here for and against it and it prompting me to do further reading myself, I am now firmly against the death penalty.

Welcome to the dark side. :)
Re: With all this back and forth over the years, was anyone converted?
Monica mentioned converting from Christianity to atheism after coming here.

Re: With all this back and forth over the years, was anyone converted?
I was a practicing Jehovah's Witness when I first started posting here way back in 2004, although I admit I was already having doubts and on my way out. The conversations and information shared here is what finally led me to becoming a professed Apatheist myself.
As Sulla pointed out, (EDIT) one of the other Jehovah's Witness on the board was Caim, although he was never officially baptized unlike myself. We talked a lot and left the religion about the same time, somewhere's around the summer of 2006. (And I'm actually talking to Caim right now on Facebook, lol)
The thing is, when you grow up in a heavily religious environment, you're kept largely ignorant of any information that contradicts and outright refutes your beliefs, especially as a child when you're in your formative years. You're a captive audience. Ironically, it was the controversy surrounding the movie The Passion of the Christ that made me curious to see what everyone was saying about it. I stumbled upon the hostile, chaotic debates that were raging on the Pit back in the day and the rest is history.
There's a saying. If an honest person is confronted with information that proves him false, he will either change his beliefs or cease being honest. For me the choice was clear. The Jehovah's Witnesses are a cult that drill into your head every angle and reason why ONLY their religion is the one "true" religion throughout the world, and all other faiths are false. Well, once I turned that same critical eye onto my own religion, and found their explanations lacking, there was no place else to go. Ironically, that was their own fault.

On the Pit there was also matchooman. Did you know he returned a few years later as Botzwana? He had gone on a missionary trip to Mexico and married a woman there. He said he was no longer a JW and was now a Protestant. Many of us were shocked.

Re: With all this back and forth over the years, was anyone converted?
Oh, you're right! I totally forgot about him!
And yes, I do remember him returning under a new name, although I don't recall him posting a lot.

Re: With all this back and forth over the years, was anyone converted?
Great story, thanks.
Re: With all this back and forth over the years, was anyone converted?
HarvardLawGuy converted twice, from Catholic to atheist and then back to Catholic. When he returned after finding God again he was displeased by the reaction from a few of the atheists and hasn't been seen since.

I was a soft atheist when I first started on here, then I got kind of hard. Saw a picture of Aduh, soft again. Recently saw the trailer for Ghost In the Shell with Scarlett Johansson, she wears that tight suit and does science stuff. HARD.
