Little House on the Prairie : Freshly Delicious Home Made Country Cooking
Re: Freshly Delicious Home Made Country Cooking
I really wish they incorporated some of the little house cookbook recipes into the show.
http://www.littlehousebooks.com/fun/recipes.cfm
snowcandy
cornmeal pudding with molasses
pulled molasses candy
country fair lemonade
hotcakes with sugar syrup and almanzo's pancakes for that matter
heart shaped christmas cakes
hailstone ice cream!
why they didn't do the snowcandy in the winter, the heart shaped cakes at christmas, the ice cream during the country fair
in the show, they had ma and carrie make those apple fritters I want that recipe. those looked good.
Oh God. Fortune vomits on my eiderdown once more.

Stew sucks

In one episode, Nellie took fresh bread out of oven and sliced it, touching it with bare hand, it was supposed to be hot.

Despite it's drawbacks for bad cooks like Nellie and Harriet, I always thought Nellie's Restaurant would be the delicious place to dine. The scene in "Little Lou" where Harriet is generously putting potatoes into that huge pot of stew, looked appetizing, even when she threw the large silver salt shaker into it before confronting John Carter.
There was also the scene where Willie, after taking over management of the restaurant, serves Mr. Edwards a delicious looking steak lunch. As scrumptious as it looked though, I noticed the meals weren't steaming with heat, most notably on Harriet's stew.
I also thought the crispy fried chicken looked especially yummy in those episodes featuring it, but had the illusion broken after finding out it wasn't fresh off "ma's iron stove", but a "take-out order from KFC".
The point I'm trying to make is that this show presented a totally wholesome image of a struggling pioneer town, but that it's all not what it seems - there were modern day conveniences throughout and sometimes plain fakery. Goes to show they did a good job in creating a Walnut Grove of the 1800s.
