The Wicker Man : FIlms like this
Re: FIlms like this
Night of the Demon
City of the Dead (aka Horror Hotel)
Blood on Satan's Claw
The Haunted Palace
The Haunting
The Uninvited
The Changeling (1980 not the Clint Eastwood film)
Lots of Hammer films, particularly:
The Plague of the Zombies
The Reptile
The Gorgon
The Witches
Brides of Dracula
Frankenstein Created Woman
There's an old BBC TV play called Robin Redbreast that I saw recently that has an understated atmosphere of menace and references to paganistic beliefs that I thought was very effective. Also the BBC Ghost stories for Christmas broadcast in the 70s (along with a few modern ones) are good for this too. Also The Secret of Crickley Hall, a TV ghost story miniseries, and The Orphanage, another Ghost Story.

Re: FIlms like this
none of those films are anything like the wicker man some of them are good, but they're just a bunch of horror films. wicker man is unique.
Re: FIlms like this
Wicker Man has a great, eerie, unique atmosphere and I'm wondering if there's anything comparable out there?

Exactly like it? Maybe not, but that wasn't the question I was answering. I was looking for movies with a comparable feel, isolated rural outposts as in the reptile, weird cults like in Satan's Claw and the witches, and generally eerie and menace building atmospheres, like City of the Dead, The Changeling and The Orphanage. The Wicker Man is also possibly the most Hammer-like film that wasn't made by Hammer.

Re: FIlms like this
Yer I agree the 1950's 'Night of The Demon' is similar but in my eyes a superior film.
Re: FIlms like this
i think there is nothing else quite like it, unfortunately.
Re: FIlms like this
The Witches (1966) has a few similarities:

Re: FIlms like this
Race With the Devil
Re: FIlms like this
Beaten to it but I'll re-iterate a trio of recommendations:
01) Robin Redbreast (1970's BBC production)
02) The Witches (the Hammer movie of that title)
03) Blood On Satan's Claw
And maybe another 70's BBC play entitled "Penda's Fen"
Who's driving this plane? Stan Butler?

Re: FIlms like this
Kill List. Without giving away spoilers if you've not seen it, definitely felt like there were parallels between both films.
Re: FIlms like this
Kill List has certain similarities, as does Wheatley's other films; it's obvious Wicker Man is a massive influence. I always thought Straw Dogs and Don't Look Now were good companion pieces, both made at a similar time and both similar in 'feel'..

Re: FIlms like this
I'd second "The Tenant."
also "Rosemary's Baby" and "A Boy and His Dog."
The latter is a post-apocalyptic science fantasy flick. You'll love that ending!

Re: FIlms like this
I second Race with the Devil. The difference is that there's not a major twist at the end, but it's basically The Wicker Man in Texas (unwitting people find themselves at odds with pagan villagers over human sacrifice).

Re: FIlms like this
The Tenant (1976) by Roman Polanski has a similarly haunting atmosphere, though the Wicker Man is truly unique as others have pointed out.
Re: FIlms like this
I found The Tenant one of the most unsettling films I have ever watched. And yes, I've seen The Wicker Man, which is also truly unique. The Tenant left me with an unpleasant aura which took ages to dissipate. I just couldn't shake the un-ease off. Haunting atmosphere indeed.
Re: FIlms like this
I realise this isn't a recent thread, but Dead and Buried is a film which definitely reminded me of The Wicker Man. It's not quite the same (nothing is), but well worth a watch.
