Re: Am I nuts or…..
Denim, was invented in the late 1700's, & it was mostly used in the west where it's rugged natured proved useful. So yeah, wearing a Jean Jacket (as you put it) is plausible considering this film is set over 100 years after Denim was invented.

Re: Am I nuts or…..
Denim may have been invented, but it wasn't until 1849 when Levi started making denim pants for the gold rush in CA that it became popular. And they certainly didn't have form fitting jackets like in this movie.
Re: Am I nuts or…..
Yes, Levis Straus, the man, made pants from denim cloth for prospectors during the 1849 Gold Rush. He also used brass rivets on the pockets for reinforcement because the prospectors would shove ore samples into their pockets.

I dunno if you're nuts or nut er, not. If you are saying Dern is out of place in a western of "that era," then you are nuts. Dern made almost as many westerns as all other genres combined. He's particularly effective as mean and nasty main minion.
As far as the denim jacket goes, the style was wrong for sure, that style dates from the mid 1950's, Levi's came out with a a looser longer denim jacket about 1905.
But if you are going to criticize costuming, Posse ( and nearly all westerns) gets it mostly all wrong. The hat styles are mostly all modern, 1940 1950s, the posse hats are particularly offensive. Most men who wore boots wore low heeled, roundish toed, tall stove top boots, high heeled cowboy boots were worn by actual cowboy. Womens hair style are all too modern. Etc, etc. It's really pointless to criticize clothing style. You say the jacket ruined it for you, the hats, boots, and fire arms really annoy me but don't ruin a western for me. And this little known factbelt loops didn't appear in trousers until after WWI.

Re: Am I nuts or…..
He probably saved it from him being "LOSER" in the movie "The Wild Angels".
Re: Am I nuts or…..
This is just what I was thinking. Looked total out of place. Several hats were right off the shelf, certainly not correct period.
Re: Am I nuts or…..
Levi Strauss and tailor Jacob Davis were awarded a patent for blue jeans in 1873 because gold miners needed something heavy duty. You'd have to axe the Costuming Dept. heads for the movie if the apparel is correct for that era, my guess is yes.
