The 53rd Annual Grammy Awards : album of the year

album of the year

goes to a band that ive never heard of

Re: album of the year

Haha. Yay for obscurity. biggrin.gif
They're cool. Indie Canadian alt-rock band.
I'm glad Lady Antebellum didn't sweep. That would have been super disappointing.

Re: album of the year

I'm from Montreal, and I was absolutely thrilled that a band from my hometown won for best album. Francophone Canada is very rarely represented at the Grammys, so Montrealers are very happy and proud of Arcade Fire today. Good for them! :)

Re: album of the year

i've heard of them before, but their music isn't in the genre that i usually listen to, so i'd never actually heard their music before last night. even though i wouldn't have expected it, i'm glad they won. they seemed like the underdogs of the group of artists in that category, and i don't think anybody really expected them to win. i don't think THEY even expected themselves to win, their surprise was so genuine. i love seeing genuine surprise like that and u know they're so thankful and above all, they seem REAL. u don't see that with most 'experienced' artists/actors these days.

Re: album of the year

I agree, I think they never saw it coming and probably weren't even expecting to win.

Obviously, they've been all over the national and local news today. CBC just did a story on them which made me respect them even more.

They've been relentlessly refusing all corporate sponsorships, and the only time they let one of their songs be featured in an ad (it was for the Superbowl), they gave all the proceeds to Haiti. Makes me even happier that they won last night.

If i find the CBC story online, I'll post it here.

awww that makes me happy to hear that!! i hope they maintain their humility forever, it's very refreshing! unfortunately, i can't even say that for some of my favorite artists whose graciousness usually seems a bit phony. i can't wait to read that story if/when you find it =)

Re: album of the year

They're good folks and their live show is immense. If you ever get a chance to see them perform, do, even if you're not crazy about their albums.

I don't think it would have broken their hearts if they'd missed out on it, like, but their delight was plain to see, and I was really happy for them.

I know everybody's amazed at how many people have never heard of them at all, but just as interesting to me is that so many people - myself included - find that so unimaginable. It's like there's two completely separate musical ecosystems that only cross over at Awards shows.

There you go, xxbabieluvxx, found the CBC story (it's a video, about 15 minutes long, but I found it quite interesting.)

Jim Valentine, I have no problem believing you. Some of the best shows I've ever seen were by artists I wasn't that keen on on CD. I've no doubt they're great live, they sounded awesome at the Grammys.

They gave a free show in the Montreal suburbs (of course!) last summer, but I was stuck at stupid work that night and couldn't make it. Now I wish I'd called in sick, darnit!
