Re: The plague that is political correctness..
Political correctness is a tool used by liberals to make moral principles relative and political ideals absolute, so "good" and "evil" becomes a matter of policy, under their control.
It doesn't matter what you do, by causing offense or trying to avoid it you're being an useful idiot. If you cause offense, it becomes even more absurd, as you're implying the current constraints are not enough. By trying to avoid it, you're being constrained.
The best approach to deal with political correctness is to expose the political ideal behind it. No offense, no jumping, just expose it as the manipulation it is and move on.

Laughably incorrect.

Or just ignore it.

Re: The plague that is political correctness..
There will always be people who are offended by things in basically every major group. Political correctness does not seem to me to be the powerful force some make it out to be. People have been "crusading" against political correctness for decades now and they always act like it's some bold new rebellion when it's been done to death. Some people use it as an excuse to shut down an argument or dismiss a rival viewpoint.
Re: The plague that is political correctness..
I don't remember political correctness being a thing, under whatever terminology, prior to the late 80s/early 90s.
(And what I have in mind by political correctness is the whole ideology re beliefs about how meaning works and how "embedded" meaning can harm others and so on.)

Re: The plague that is political correctness..
I know.
At work we call Caucasians white boys. When we talk about caucasian females we see we just call 'em white girls. Call it like it is I say.
If we did more of that we probably wouldn't have all these white boys blowing up federal buildings and shooting up a scool every monthit would give them an outlet.

Re: The plague that is political correctness..
People taking advantage of the concept of political correctness is inevitable just as people who claim to be proudly politically incorrect to cover up that they're racist, sexist, or homophobic or whatever else is considered unacceptable in today's society. It's funny how internet contrarians refuse to accept that variation unless it's in their favor.
It's not so hard to have an honest discussion without offending people as opponents of PC always try to make it out to be-who are surely going to emphatically disagree with me on time in some incorrect fashion.
What's missing in movies is same as in society: a good sense of work ethic and living up to ideals.

Hate is never correct !
Re: The plague that is political correctness..
Do you prefer ugly truths or comfortable lies? If I say black people like fried chicken, do you tell me I'm wrong or do you tell me I'm racist? If you tell me I'm racist, you're the one making conversation difficult, by turning a question truth (regular correctness) into a question of morality (political correctness). Very bad manners on your part.
Re: The plague that is political correctness..
I think his point is that people often dismiss arguments and research they dislike by accusing them of hiding "harsh truths" and being PC regardless of the validity of the arguments or research. For example, any research that's against spanking is generally dismissed as just being PC by some people.
Re: The plague that is political correctness..
Generally speaking, "political correctness" is a phrase used by people who have offended or annoyed others when they are, as a predictable result, publicly shunned.
Did mean people say your jokes were racist and (worse) unfunny? Time to sob about the tyranny of political correctness run amok! And did they call your most cherished values ugly, mean-spirited and selfish? I suggest you whine incessantly about the terrible oppression of courageous intellects like your own!
There is nothing remotely new in the collective shunning of disagreeable people and ideas. The only novelty is the phrase itself.

Re: The plague that is political correctness..
i like how all the talk about chilled or restricted speech is aimed at liberal incarnations (pc), when there are far better examples on the conservative side. look at conservative universities (e.g., liberty, bob jones, etc.). some of those schools ban pants for women, unauthorized participation in protests on AND off campus, being with a member of the opposite sex in certain settings or at certain times (lol!). people can get fired for getting a divorce. there are still blasphemy laws on the books that actually get enforced:

The allegedly victimized Jesus statue sits in the front yard of Love In the Name of Christ, a Christian organization in teens hometown of Everett, Pa."

Re: The Plague That Makes Your Booty Move…
Political correctness has taught me that it's just better to cause offense than to spend your life walking on eggshells worrying you might offend someone, for it is surely more disharmonious to society if everyone walks around with such pent up thoughts and feelings.

You think it's "better" to cause offense because you lack the self-restraint to keep your thoughts to yourself. You said it best here:
In other word, you're like the girl I saw one day at a Wendy's years ago who saw a gay man standing on line, went up to him and screamed, *beep* at the top of her lungs, because she had so much pent up hostility towards gays, she couldn't hold them in. That's what you're talking aboutnot "everyone" walking around with pent up thoughts and feelings, but people like you and that girl, who can't just keep your thoughts and feelings to yourself.

Re: The plague that is political correctness..
Yes, there is something fundamentally dishonest about P.C. It's like a camouflage for hate/prejudice.
Re: The plague that is political correctness..
I agree. People wanting to keep everything hush, hush so as not to offend anyone is just stupid. Brush it under the rug and maybe these uncomfortable topics will just go away eventually.
Doesn't it make much more sense to have open and honest discussions with eachother about what is offensive and why it offends you? There are always gonna be ignorant *beep* who just blindly hate those different from them, but i feel like most of us just need to take more time to understand eachother and our differences. This would be much more productive if people weren't afraid to speak honestly in fear of offending others.
Also, i think people need to work on seeing both sides of things. It is important to try to put yourself in other peoples shoes, and for everyone not to be so defensive and judgemental. I love that you said pc is a camouflage for hate/prejudice. Sadly, i think you are 100% correct.

Way to see both sides of things.
Re: The plague that is political correctness..
Sorry, but i don't understand what you're trying to say?
Re: The plague that is political correctness..
Just expressing my amusement at encouraging seeing things from both sides and endorsing, with 100% no less, the statement that political correctness is a camouflage for hate in the space of a single paragraph.
Re: The plague that is political correctness..
Oh yeah, i see your point. I think you probably could have found a kinder, less condescending way of pointing out my hypocrisy but i guess it's more important for you to point out your superior knowledge. Glad i could amuse you.
Re: The plague that is political correctness..
For someone arguing that people shouldn't be so easily offended, you do seem rather touchy. However, I do apologize if my post came off as condescending, that wasn't the intention.
Re: The plague that is political correctness..
Well thanks for apologizing, i appreciate that. I probably didn't choose my words correctly in my previous post. I think our little exchange here could be an example of the point i was attempting to make. You were not afraid of calling me out for saying something hypocritical. I acknowledged your point, but let you know that i preferred if you would've said it in a nicer way. You kindly apologized and let me know you had no intention of offending. I feel much better now than i did when i read your initial comment.
I don't think pc topics should be avoided in fear of offending. I do think we should be careful to be respectful of eachother while discussing them. You know, just basic human decency stuff. Thanks again for being cool about it.

Re: The plague that is political correctness..
Political correctness doesn't necessarily entail that some topics must not be talked about, only an agreement of using a language that is more accommodating of groups which historically have been disenfranchised. Not so different in fact from what you are describing.
I would also invite you to consider the fact that it's easy to say that we should be able to discuss and debate things that offend people if for you debating those issues means that you go on the internet or to a pub with friends to do so. But if you're, say, gay and people make homophobic remarks at work day after day then maybe you'll get tired of engaging them in debate every time. So perhaps it's not such a bad idea to have a culture where it's frowned upon to make remarks that make some groups of people feel alienated.
I'm not saying that some people don't take it too far and had the bend of this thread been different I might have taken the opposing view (I tend to take positions defensive of what is under attack) but that happens with most things and I think political correctness is still a positive thing in moderation and need not preclude us from being able to have challenging discussions.

Re: The plague that is political correctness..
Let me be clear about this. I do not think it is ok to intentionally offend or hurt another human being, ever. Just because i don't think political correctness is a good thing does not mean i go around saying racist or bigoted things.
I think we should be able to debate these issues openly in order to educate ignorance.
What we have now are a lot of people that are pc by day, but get home and are just as ignorant/racist/homophobic as they ever were. They just aren't talking about it except to other people who are ignorant/racist/homophobic. No one is learning anything that way. If anything, it is just breeding more hate.
I don't think these issues will dissipate because everyone has chosen to "use a language that is more accommodating". In order to diminish these issues we must be able to speak to eachother about our differences.

Have there been studies showing that this breeds more hate? If not then that's just your assessment, one with which I disagree. The truth of the matter is that racism, sexism, homophobia etc. have decreased significantly in the last few decades despite political correctness and I don't see this trend stopping. So even if political correctness did "breed more hate" (of which I am yet to be convinced) clearly it doesn't do so to a degree that would cancel forces which act to decrease hate (I don't really like that word, though, I think few people actually hate). This being the case, the fact that bigots keep their bigotry at home is not such a bad thing for the people who would otherwise be the targets of said bigotry. Like I said, it's easy to talk about educating the ignorant if you don't have to live it every day. Perhaps some people just want to live their lives without having to constantly engage people in debate.
And like I said, I don't think this means we can't talk about these subjects. In fact, sometimes you can make racist and sexist comments to your heart's content and all you get for it is being made the presidential candidate of a major party in the most powerful nation on the planet.
Re: The plague that is political correctness..
Sure, this is all just based on my own opinion and personal experience. I know not what "the studies" show.

Re: The plague that is political correctness..
You anti PC people are idiots. Is that non PC enough for you?
Are there weirdos who take things to silly extremes? Yes. In every possible area of thought. Like you anti PC nutjobs, for instance.
But here's the essence of political correctness:
Little people want to be called little people instead of midgets.
The PC among us will respect their wish and call them little people.
You anti PC freaks will go out of your way to call them a midget and sit there acting all incredulous when they get mad.
It's called being an azzhole. So stop.
But do you see the mental gymnastics you do: "Might as well insult people since they have the nerve to be insulted by me calling them names".
Grow up.
Either way: you world is actually crumbling like you think it is. So you should be sad. No more cutting to the front of the line. No more being rude to strangers. No more being "better" than others.

That reply hits both ways.
You want to be able to offend people but yet not to be offended by people.
So its ''Just because I hurt your feelings don't mean you should be able to hurt mine''
Sounds to me like facists who hate the police, very inconsistant and childish.
I mean the only examples of a problem are fictional, and can be classified a no issue issues, like not enough black people in movies, or not enough fat peopel in the model world.
And the example shows a dude raging on and on about these type of issues, while his latest video is named ''Why I'm Proud to be White!''.
How could anyone take this discussion seriously?
Tell me, do any of you actually belive that a boss would employ a rasist guy who goes on and on about rasist topics and will offend the boss and part of already employed workers, if they can avoid it? Would you employ a guy would do that too you? Would you want your children/wife to be offended/judged in this manner?
Because it sounds to me like the above is the real issue you guys will face in life not some random journalist who took offence to the name of a cake. It looks to me like the real subject is being avoided and replaced by the non-issue stuff.
Topic make me think of https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=obZ7_c4BrDc read and laugh.

Re: The plague that is political correctness..
Political correctness is bullshit There shouldn't be some rule or anything that tells you that you can't say offensive things. That's what SJWs and the whole idea of political correctness is pushing. The message of being culturally sensitive and respectful (which you should be) is lost because the whole point of it is to limit freedom of speech. Instead of all that, just push the message to be kind and respectful to people of all racial/religious backgrounds. Simple.

I would argue that there's a political correctness of the right as well as of the left. It takes, perhaps different, forms from that of the Left, but it exists.

PC is a mental straightjacket. It's come to the point where it's better just to cause offense than to jump through hoops trying to avoid it.
