Taxi : How and why did they write John out?

How and why did they write John out?

It's been a long time since i've seen the series, and I don't remember how or why the wrote the character John out. I admit that he wasn't the most exciting of the cast and I wonder if they got rid of him because of that.

Re: How and why did they write John out?

They got rid of him because he and Tony were too similar, according to Randall Carver who plays John.

"GREAT SCOTT!"

Re: How and why did they write John out?

Randall Carver's character John Burns was easily the most disposable person on the show. His "wide eyed young man in the big city for the first time" personality didn't lend a lot in terms of comic development hence why he was dropped from the show after the first season. It's one thing to be a nice guy, but on a comedy series you have to be interesting/funny if you wanna stick for around for the long run and sadly John Burns really wasn't that person.

His replacement however proved to be a key asset to the show. Christopher Lloyd's Jim Ignatowski is still widely remembered by many and bought the actor two back to back Emmy's for his work in the series.

Re: How and why did they write John out?

The last we see of him he wrecked cab 804. Someone theorized that he was fired after that. I like that explanation.

Re: How and why did they write John out?

John was boring and underdeveloped so his departure was no loss.

Re: How and why did they write John out?

I agree. He didn't add much to the show. And like Randall Carver said himself, John and Tony were interchangeable. Both were idiotic and clueless, so there was no point.

Re: How and why did they write John out?

I disagree with the people pointing to his similarity to Tony. In my opinion, even without Tony, John did not add enough enjoyment to the show to justify his continuation.

And I don't put all the blame on the writing. I think another actor could have done a lot more with the character.

It should be against the law to use 'LOL'; unless you really did LOL!

Re: How and why did they write John out?

Well 'John" was a bit slow to get things but Tony was waaay slower.

Sad to say , the 70s and times before that ,Italian Americans
(Especially NY ones) had to be written as 'dumb' or 'uneducated'.

One of the things that was kind of a funny show but later hurt his character's
chances at growth of any kind ,was when he married that girl the night he met her.

When you marry off a character ,it takes away any kind of fun in
building a relationship or romantic/sexual chamistry between the M & F actors.

The show whre John & wife need to borrow $$ from Alexit's really not
that funny. They've made a big msitake ,despite actually loving each other.

They should have had the 2 chicken out and date in a
sensible manner and have funny situations arise from it.

Randall's going to be 70 next year in May. He actually played
himself in the 199 film 'Man On The Moon' (the movie about about Andy Kaufman).

His most recent 'big' part was "Mr. Bankside" in the Oscar nominated ,
"There Will be Blood" and also made a film in 2012 called, "Dead Season."

Go for it or just be a gopher!
