Well I remember this movie more than any of the others. When I saw in 1979 I thought the fight scenes were Great.I thought this actor could really Box!
I was very young and really enjoyed the foul language and sex (Male/female)more than I should have. But the rape scenes and awful cinematography made me feel like Prison was the worse place in the world to end up,and I must say I have never forgotten how scary this movie depicted Prison life!I am thankful that I saw this movie and reccommend it to all pre-teen males as a method of SCARY the crap out of them and staying out of trouble.

The first time I saw Penitentiary it was during a double feature on TNT when I was in Highschool circa mid 90s. TNT showed Penitentiary I and II back to back. Now at age 30 I proudly have a Penitentiary II poster hanging in my living room. Where else can you get Ernie Hudson and Mr. T in the same shot! I love both films and have them both on DVD now. But I have yet to see Penitentiary III

"Penitentiary III" isn't the best one in the trilogy, but it's worth a look.

I just watched this film and really enjoyed it. It was very raw and rough around the edges, with a hard quasi-realistic quality to it that's mighty tough to shake.

I remember it. I was to youjg to understand the underlying complexities. I'm embarressed these films actually were made. Most disturbing is the fact that most of those actors and actreses are really good. It's a shame these were only films they coulds get roles in. I bet today they cringe when they see themselves.

I remember this being released, but it wasn't playing in a theater near me at the time. I was always under the impression that it was a documentary. I've finally seen it, and it feels and looks very much like a documentary. It's hard to believe these are actors because this film seems so realistic well, and also because some of the acting isn't that great. Really effective prison movie.
