Scenes from the Suburbs : I LOVE Arcade Fire, but….

I LOVE Arcade Fire, but….

this just screams hipstery douchey poopy movie. Remember Where the Wild Things Are? Yea, it was bad.

Hoping this is a creative short film that doesn't try to be allcool.and stuff.

Re: I LOVE Arcade Fire, but….

I disagree. I very much like the look of it, although I think people are going to go looking for some very clear cut narrative that they're not going to find.

All the reviews thus far have been fairly positive. As I understand it, this is kind of Will Butler's baby, Spike isn't the sole force at the wheel.

And to be fair, I think WTWTA's failing were largely down to how it was pitched and how it was edited. There's a beautiful movie in there, you'd just have to cut it out of the other hour and a half hiding it.

Did you see I'm Here?

Re: I LOVE Arcade Fire, but….

Where the Wild Things Are was amazing! People seem to not like it because they think the kid is a brat. They don't understand the kid is depressed. People try to ignore the fact young kids can be depressed. It's sad but true.
And of course this movie looks like a hipster movie. Arcade Fire is a hipster band.

Re: I LOVE Arcade Fire, but….

*cringe* I think just because the hipsters seemed to like it doesn't mean they're all hipster oriented. I don't think Where the Wild Things Are was made with the intentions of being aimed towards hipsters- it just ended up that way. :P When Arcade Fire was "undergrown" the hipsters liked it, but now they won a Grammy- they're old news. The thing with Arcade Fire now is that the hipsters hate them because they're popular and because AF rejected the whole hipster thing ["Rococo?"]. The hipsters who are so hipster that they try to pretend they aren't hipsters wallow in their AF hatred by making obscure self-made blogs devoted to bashing. It's the pretentious art students who really hate them. It's the semi-almost-pretentious art students who like them because they still think they have to. And it's the normal art-lovers who just seem to like Arcade Fire because Arcade Fire makes a good little ditty.

In a nutshell.

Re: I LOVE Arcade Fire, but….

I agree with that. But a band that attracts hipsters to begin with is bound to make a hipsterish movie.

Re: I LOVE Arcade Fire, but….

I can safely say after watching it, it is not something that will only appeal to hipsters. Jonze nails the dialogue, making it actually sound like a bunch of teenagers. He quickly and efficiently hits the ups and down of growing up. I don't think that you have to be a hipster to appreciate it. Plus, I don't really get all the animosity towards where the wild things are. It wasn't insincere or "ironic" or display the kind of douchebaggery that hipsters do.
