Re: Surpasses the original
My apologies. To be fair, I have a bad case of psycho stalker and it's really out of my control. His life must be fascinating though.
Re: Surpasses the original
Agreed. It surpassed the original in all aspects that make a great slasher flick ie creative kills, hot chicks, sex and nudity, drugs, strong female hero, frightening and disturbing scenes and comic relief. Not to mention the amazing cinematography. Overall, one of the best Fridsy films IMHO.
Re: Surpasses the original
mike, your comments suck, dude. Only trendy nerds say "kills", real men say deaths

Re: Surpasses the original
Granted, the original is somewhat of a cult classic and easily one of the most influential horror films ever made, but does anyone feel that in most terms Friday the 13th Part 2 is easily not just a better made film but a better film all around?
Absolutely, yes. Its always been my favorite installment. Amy Steel is my all-time favorite horror movie heroine.
Re: Surpasses the original
I agree. The original was arguably boring before Bill's death after which it was brilliant. This one was a much more focussed movie and the ending with Ginny using her head (Rare for a final girl) was refreshing. Jason was also human and got hurt unlike the Superman he became later on.
Re: Surpasses the original
I think the original is better paced. The problem with part 2 is that long flashback opening sequence that is tedious to sit through after one time. In a movie that's only 80 something minutes to begin with, it makes the film feel even shorter. It has some effective scares and Jason is creepy, but the film is too "economical" for meit feels like an assembly line factory of death with as little exposition as possible just to make sure you know a character's name before they die. Part 3 didn't have the best script, but even that one had more fleshed-out characters like Shelley. Part 2 is just too "breezy"it's such a short film hampered by that lengthy opening. It feels like you're almost at the climactic chase scene by the time you finish your popcorn.

Re: Surpasses the original
Not to me. It isn't even my 2nd favorite of the first four films. I still like it alot of course, and Amy Steel is great.
Re: Surpasses the original
I saw both of them back to back on the same night for the first time in years and was surprised how much I liked Part II more than Part I. Although the graphic death scenes in Part I helped create the modern slasher and the killer broke gender boundaries I still enjoyed Part II more. The lighting, pacing, dialogue, and acting in Part I is all inferior to that of Part II. So in other words, F13 feels like a much cheaper film than it's sequel obviously due it's smaller budget.
Re: Surpasses the original
But in that light, the original feels so much more real. The picture isn't the most vivid but it's almost like you are watching someone's nightmare.

Re: Surpasses the original
I think most horror fans would probably agree with you. I am not one of them :p. While I like part 2 and consider it a classic slasher flick, amongst the first four (the best of the whole series for sure) I actually find part 2 weaker than not just 1 but also 3 and 4. But we'll stick with just comparing it to the original for now. I'll break down the two films and give my opinion on each:
Atmosphere: Original gets the nod easily. It had a constant since of dread and mystery and even a hint of creepiness a time or two. The lighting/cinematography/camera work and use of settings in the original was used to much better horror effect. The sequel had better production value but something about it feels so much moreI dunnolight?
Kills/Gore: Original and it's not even close, though the MPAA eviscerating the sequel might have something to do with that.
Score: Again the original easily. The sequel's score was good mind you but didn't feel as menacing or innovative. The originals score is among my favorite in horror.
Characters: Eh the series has never really been known for fleshed out interesting characters so as for group of kids from original vs. group of kids from the sequel I'll give it to the original as they seemed a *little* less stock.
Final Girl: Ginny is awesome and I easily see why people dig her but Alice is just so likeable and vulnerable. This one is easily debatable for me.
Killer: C'mon Mrs. Voorhees is awesome! Jason was great in 2 and had the unique baghead look he'd later drop but I don't feel he really came into his own as the icon we all know and love until 3 (and not just because of the mask)
Final Jumpscare: Jason jumping out of the lake is legendary. Jason jumping through the window is effective but almost hokey by comparison
So for me the original trumps 2 quite easily. Still part 2 kicks much ass. :)

Re: Surpasses the original
Yes this one is better than the first.
Re: Surpasses the original
Part 2 has better deaths, chases and characters.
Re: Surpasses the original
Yes. Part 2 is better paced, the characters are more interesting, and the final chase scene is better.
Part one's pros are that it has a better "atmosphere" and is eerier, the final jump scare is better, and Mrs. Voorhees death is classic.
(LOL, forgive my overuse of the word "better" in this post.)

Re: Surpasses the original
Better than the first, and my favorite of the series. I kinda prefer the burlap sack to the hockey mask to be honest (its more creepier and disturbing, and gives Jason a more sinister appearance).
