Fast Times at Ridgemont High : The thing that bugged me most

The thing that bugged me most

about the film has always been how part of Damones "five point plan" is to put on side one of Led Zeppelin 4 and then in the car Mark plays Kashmir off Physical Graffiti.
I mean maybe the point is that Mark is so nervous he doesn't remember which album Zep 4 is. I guess over time I have mellowed on this a little and passed it off as the character, but for a long time it just annoyed me to no end that they couldn't even include the right Led Zeppelin album in the film.
Argh!

Re: The thing that bugged me most

In the trivia section, it explains that the producers could not get the rights for Led Zeppelin IV.

I originally thought they did it intentionally just to show how much of a klutz Mark was.

Re: The thing that bugged me most

Nice, thanks. However that doesn't really explain why the dialogue was not changed to match the song and album..

Always learning something new

Re: The thing that bugged me most

I always thought it was because Mark was a doof too! Never read the trivia. Since they kept the dialogue as is, it kind of does become Mark being a doof.

Re: The thing that bugged me most

Kashmir works better. Whereas side 1 of LEd Zeppelin 4 is kind of mellow, so Damone gives the advice because it would provide a more romantic feel when entertaining the ladies, Ratner is awkward and trying but picks the wrong album. So when the scene comes on the part of Kashmir playing sounds like some hard death metal song, totally loud and inappropriate for an innocent 1st date, and here these 2 kids are going on a date and care barely see over the wheel. It's perfect! And hilarious!

Re: The thing that bugged me most

I actually came to IMDB because I was looking for that quote. It's something that's always kind of stuck in my head and I wanted to confirm what the exact quote was.

Anyway, I think the dialog wasn't changed because it just doesn't sound as cool to say, "when it comes to making out, whenever possible put on side one of Led Zeppelin Physical Graffiti."
All these years that line has always stuck out to me cause it has a nice kind of alliteration. "side one of led zeppelin four"

Re: The thing that bugged me most

It's amazing to me that they even got Zeppelin to sign off on the use of one of their songs. They were notorious for not selling out to films or commercials, at least until later. They wouldn't even let Linklater use Dazed and Confused. Maybe Crowe had something to do with the use in Fast Times.

Re: The thing that bugged me most

Indeed, it was because Cameron Crowe was pretty much the only music journalist to give the band positive reviews in Rolling Stone magazine.

Re: The thing that bugged me most

But to comment on that aspect in the film, using Kashmir instead of Black Dog worked so well. Without dialog, it captures the ineptitude and fumbling nature of the dating novice in the presence of a beautiful girl. It's also kind of an inside joke that not everyone got, which I found amusing.

Re: The thing that bugged me most

But, it was supposed to be when making out. At that point, they were just driving to dinner.

Re: The thing that bugged me most

didn't that scene get cut?
