The Slugger's Wife : The Worst Movie Ever Made

No question. Can't believe that Martin Ritt, the great director, acted in this piece of excrement. To be honest, I didn't even know it was him til I looked it up here. How could such talented people be involved with this dreck? Neil Simon actually wrote this? Or did he just type it? My respect for him has just been shattered.

I was going to rip this movie as well, but every point you made was what I was thinking. This movie is horrendous. Although, I have to admit, it is downright funny watching O'Keefe try and swing and Demornay trying to sing. I think Ritt actually worked w/ Ashby on some films when Ashby was an editor. Probably did this acting bit as a favor.

Plus, DeMornay supposedly has this great career singing those awful Air Supply songs? Not positive if it was Air Supply or some other terrible late 70s early 80s group.

I came here to see if anyone knows why Hal Ashby would do this movie. This is my 4th ashby movie. I felt that with every one I had seen they got better. First, Harold and Maude, then Being There, then the Last Detail. The three I can easily say are personal favorites, so I saw this in the video store and figured it must be better than it looks if Ashby directed it. UGH! WHY???? WHY DID HE DO THIS? he must have been really broke.

It may be a bad movie, but yet I had to have it on DVD. For a bad movie, I still remember alot about it.

It is a horrible movie. But Rebecca DeMornay looks great!

Gawd-awful singing, worst fake-baseball scenes ever in a movie, ridiculous actingother than that, it was an 80's "gem".

Never saw the movie, watched it today with my cousin who is a baseball player. He was very critical of O'Keefe's swing, and yelled "it's a grounder to third base",
"it's a infield popup", and "it's a damn foul ball, way foul" at three of the supposed home run swings.

It was nice to hear the late great Skip Carey's voice again, and I recognized Mark Fidrych as one of the baseball players. I've always like "the Bird" since seeing him pitch back when he had that one great season ('76), so that was nice.

But other than that, I agree this movie is one of the worst things I ever saw. Terrible dialog, unrealistic story line, bad acting, edited to make it seem like pivotal parts of the movie were missing; just a terrible waste of time to watch.

This movie was made about the time that Hollywood was having terrible problems with drugs, one has to wonder if that had anything to do with why this movie was such a stinker.

I'm not gonna dog O'Keefe's swing, it wasnt that bad. He also had a bat fling that was nice.

There is one interesting thing I read recently about this film. In Belinda Carlisle's autobiography she tells the story of her romance with one of the LA Dodgers at the height of the Go-Go's fame. She didn't marry him but they lived together for a few years. That's where they got the story for The Slugger's Wife.

That would be Dodger's right fielder Mike Marshall, who did live with Carlise in a Marina Del Ray condo for a few years as she battled a cocaine addiction, per her autobiography.

I am going to agree with you on this one. I am watching it now. It has everything that you'd expect in a really bad movie: dull plot, horrible acting, cheesy dialogue, lame music, zero star power. I cannot believe that Hal Ashby and Neil Simon collaborated on this snooze-fest.
