Friday the 13th Part VIII: Jason Takes Manhattan : I can see why most hardcore Friday the 13th hates this - it has a story

I can see why most hardcore Friday the 13th hates this - it has a story

Ok, the story is pretty dumb, but at least there is more than just Jason killing people in this movie. Compared to other Friday the 13th movies I think this one is pretty decent and I am surprised by the low score.

Re: I can see why most hardcore Friday the 13th hates this - it has a story

Im a hardcore Friday fan and this is my favorite Friday.

Re: I can see why most hardcore Friday the 13th hates this - it has a st

Most fans hate it because Jason doesn't actually take Manhattan.
Never heard that one.

Who cares? This is the best movie of all the Fridays. I love how the scenes are shot/framed. I love how the scenes are so diverse. I love the look of Jason in this movie. I love the campy script and funny characters. Very good entertainment. I usually don't watch movies over and over but I've come back to this one for many times since its debut.

9/10 from me.

Re: I can see why most hardcore Friday the 13th hates this - it has a st

You cant be serious, this is absolute garbage. Nearly a Police Academy version of F13. Absolute *beep*

Re: I can see why most hardcore Friday the 13th hates this - it has a st

Sounds like this is the only Friday movie you have seen. It is awful.

Re: I can see why most hardcore Friday the 13th hates this - it has a story

I don't hate it. This one is a guilty pleasure :)

Re: I can see why most hardcore Friday the 13th hates this - it has a story

0_o I think most fans of the series like it somewhat. It's just usually ranked near the bottom.
It also doesn't have any more story then any of the other films.

Re: I can see why most hardcore Friday the 13th hates this - it has a story

I rank it near the top of the series.

Re: I can see why most hardcore Friday the 13th hates this - it has a story

It's my 2nd least favorite, and one of the only 2 I don't like (Along with Freddy vs. Jason)

I love Tamara though <3 Eva too!

Re: I can see why most hardcore Friday the 13th hates this - it has a story

I WOULD love it and rank it near the top had the good characters lasted longer. I loved Eva and Tamara :) Mrs. V, Wayne, and JJ were good too!

However, they kill all the good characters off with only a few scenes. The deaths are just boring (minus the stupid boxing kill) And the characters who make it far (minus Mrs. V) are forgettable at best and downright annoying at worst.

Re: I can see why most hardcore Friday the 13th hates this - it has a story

I'd say that, out of all of them that I've seen, this one has the LEAST story. Except maybe Part 6.

Re: I can see why most hardcore Friday the 13th hates this - it has a story

I thought part 7 actually had a good story as well, I'm surprised it was so popular among fans. It dealt with a magickal girl, most Fri 13 fans are not heavily into magic lol they are usually just into brutal slaughter.

Re: I can see why most hardcore Friday the 13th hates this - it has a story

Honestly, it's difficult for me to get much out of any of the Friday films, the horror is stagnant. I actually enjoy Parts 6 & 8 the most because at least they try to make some fun out of it, Freddy Vs. Jason would then capitalize on this.

Re: I can see why most hardcore Friday the 13th hates this - it has a story

I dunno, I think while it might not be the best of the 80s entriesI still really like it, and I think that everything that followed was terrible.
"Jason Goes To Hell" and so onthey got worse and worse. And "Freddy Vs. Jason" was awful. I'm sorry, but that's how I feel. It had that stupid early-2000s look and feel, where everything is way too melodramatic, the CGI effects were terrible (as CGI often is), and it was far too comedic. And I can't buy that Jason and Freddy exist in the same fictional universe, its too much of a stretch.

Re: I can see why most hardcore Friday the 13th hates this - it has a story

Honestly though I don't think you could have a vs movie without it being comedic. I don't think a vs movie could ever be TRULY scary, it's all about the action.

About Freddy and Jason existing in the same universe, I remember a Freddy's Nightmare episode where a guy was dressed like Jason for a Halloween party, so that coudl suggest that in the Freddy universe that Fri 13 was just a movie and Jason was a just a ficticious character, but I dunno sometimes ppl DO dress like REAL seriel killers.

Re: I can see why most hardcore Friday the 13th hates this - it has a story

I hated it cause it was boring that simple

Re: I can see why most hardcore Friday the 13th hates this - it has a story

It's OK, and it has some really badass moments. Some things bothered me though:

I didn't like that Jason was in such a populated area letting people live. It's contrary to all the other films as Jason normally kills every person he sees.

The scene where he lifts his mask to scare the punks is stupid.

I loved Hodder's performance, but I hate the look of Jason in this one. After the badass look Jason sported in The New Blood, his look here is disappointing.

"Don't conform, be like us."

Re: I can see why most hardcore Friday the 13th hates this - it has a story

That didn't really bother me. I mean Jason is territorial, he kills ppl who come onto his turf, and he feels Crystal Lake IS his turf. As someone point out, I think he was after the guy and girl b/c he first encountered them at Crystal Lake and he associated them with there.

The other ppl in NY meant nothing to him.

I know he was killing ppl right and left at the rave in FvJ but that's b/c he thought he was under the instructions of his mother.

Re: I can see why most hardcore Friday the 13th hates this - it has a st

I didn't like that Jason was in such a populated area letting people live. It's contrary to all the other films as Jason normally kills every person he sees.
It's common psychology. If you're zeroed in on by thugs, a biker gang or mafia in an area, you won't get them off your back by explaining your case and pleading for mercy but must do what they want - falsely accused or not. It's basic thuganomics. It's like extortion and stalking in one. But Jason is more dark and has evolved it to squarely stalking and killing. All people that were stalked were connected to his turf.

The scene where he lifts his mask to scare the punks is stupid.
It was 1988-89. That kind of humor are often seen in movies from that decade and since as well. There are many many worse examples where movies are self-aware and making pun of themselves in todays scripts. I don't like self aware movies either, but that was really benign.

I loved Hodder's performance, but I hate the look of Jason in this one.
IMO this is the best look supernatural Jason ever did get. Wet, rotten, smelly. Awesome look and greatly acted out by Hodder. Truly befitting a supernatural monster for the 8th installment in the series.

Also look at how the scenes are lit and framed. Different angles, different light. There are so many iconic scenes in this movie. Jason standing on the boat, Jason entering the sewers, Jason on the roof. Very good cinematic work of art. Not many slashers are framed this well. Visually it's top notch and doesn't degrade over time as later sequels movies with CGI did.

That dosen't make it good. Just saying they made sh!t at that time and that was "common" doesn't make it better.

No, its actually very lazy made. Not real looking a all. Jason was best looking in parts 2-5 but then got just lazy and unreal looking. Of course its unreal character but still its not good looking. And acting was terrible too. Just as make up it got awful and made by left hand in 6th part. Complete garbage. Gore scenes are also stupid, lazy and censored. Movies style is from some Police Academy, sh!tty screenplay, amateur cinematography and stupid and idiotic plot.

Re: I can see why most hardcore Friday the 13th hates this - it has a st

it's a guy in a jumpsuit and a hockey mask.

What "look" are you talking about?

Re: I can see why most hardcore Friday the 13th hates this - it has a story

They marketed this film as Jason being in Manhattan. HE does get there but its a slow & boring ride. Had most of the film taken place in New York they would of had a hit. The audience felt cheated and we were.

Re: I can see why most hardcore Friday the 13th hates this - it has a story

No more story than any other Friday.I don't hate it but IMO it's the weakest sequel. The writers lack of respect for the audiences IQ was evident and insulting.Jason managing to float off of a lake and on to an ocean.Asking people to suspend their disbelief is one thing but this is just asking them to be stupid.

Jason magically finding his victims in New York even though they split up and went in different directions.Unless he had GPS tracking on them i don't see how that's possible. No amount of story would make up for the ridiculous plot holes in this movie. Also worst Friday ending ever.

Re: I can see why most hardcore Friday the 13th hates this - it has a st

This doesn't have any more of a story than the others. I didn't like this film because of the blatant teleporting of Jason.

Only people with money say that money doesn't matter.

Re: I can see why most hardcore Friday the 13th hates this - it has a st

The thing just plain blows! It's the worst of the Paramount Fridays, and it's got a gawdawful story!

Re: I can see why most hardcore Friday the 13th hates this - it has a st

It's the worst of the Paramount Fridays, and it's got a gawdawful story!

Agreed. A large portion of the fans give part 5 so much flak just because it wasn't the real Jason. I say WHO GIVES A FLYING F$%$???

The movie was entertaining! So if it was real Jason would it all of a sudden be good? That's their rationale.

But no, Part 8 is the crap king of the paramount Friday films. However I'd rather watch Part 8 than over Jason X and the remake anyday. FvsJ is good and although not the best friday film, JGTH definitely beats out part 8.

Part 8 could have been good if they let the director have the budget he needed. He said he wrote a huge script that took us to all the NY landmarks and the majority took place in NY rather than the other way around. That would have been awesome, but no we're left with this crap and a teleporting Jason.

Only people with money say that money doesn't matter.

Re: I can see why most hardcore Friday the 13th hates this - it has a st

I think you're confusing the terms "story" with "change of scenery"

This movie has the same story as the others. Jason comes back to life, he kills teengagers, gets defeated until the next movie. That's it.

The only thing different is that he is on a boat, and then in NY, and that's it. And quite frankly it was terrible!

Re: I can see why most hardcore Friday the 13th hates this - it has a st

It has about as much story as the previous ones really. I like these Friday films more than pre-Jason Lives because at this point the film makers were self aware of how silly the whole concept was and started to have fun with Jason.

Re: I can see why most hardcore Friday the 13th hates this - it has a st

It's Jason killing teenagers on a boat. Instead of in a campground.

I've been a hardcore fan for many years. Part 8 is my favorite one

Re: I can see why most hardcore Friday the 13th hates this - it has a st

I am a hardcore Friday fan(and a hardcore Friday the 13th fan) and I like this movie simply as a guilty pleasure. But here's why the movie was hated:

It's called: Jason Takes Manhattan

-80 percent of the movie takes place on the boat.

-Only a few shots of Manhattan were filmed in Manhattan as that's all they could afford.

-The rest of Manhattan is filmed elsewhere and is basically a bunch of alleyways with garbage.

-Jason's face at the end is the most budget *beep* Jason face ever(I guess that we can give it a slight pass since it was supposed to be melting.

-Jason teleports in physically impossible ways on a boat.

-The ending of the movie is: "Every night the sewers are flooded with waves of acid and it hits Jason turning him into a normal little kid with swimming trunks.

Like I said, I like this movie being a hardcore fan of the series, even though it has ginormous flaws. I will say what upsets me the most(other than the ending and Jason's face sucking) is the amount of missed opportunities. Really most of this happened because they kept cutting the budget. If this movie had a big budget and they were able to do even half of the stuff that had originally planned(or at least for the movie to actually take place in Manhattan the entire time), this would have been AWESOME!!!

So what? Who cares but Wikipedia?

In a lot of ways backstreets of Manhattan are alleyways and garbage.

-Jason's face at the end is the most budget *beep* Jason face ever(I guess that we can give it a slight pass since it was supposed to be melting.

You answered it yourself there.

-Jason teleports in physically impossible ways on a boat.

It's the 8th installment of the series. 8th!!! A LOT of water under the bridge. By now Jason is a supernatural monster in many aspects. Did you sleep through the previous 7 movies?

-The ending of the movie is: "Every night the sewers are flooded with waves of acid and it hits Jason turning him into a normal little kid with swimming trunks.

Most movies stretch the imagination regarding human behaviour, physics i.e. the way sh*t work. Friday the 13th being in a highly imaginative genre it doesn't disappoint. Very commonplace in Hollywood to look for convenient outs. It's not about realism, it's about if it's entertainingand it is.

Re: I can see why most hardcore Friday the 13th hates this - it has a st

It's average at bestThe producers pulled the old bait and switchJason takes Manhattan??? More like Jason takes over a boat and then shows up in Manhattan in the last 20 minutes

The feeling we have hereremember it, take it home and do some good with it. Please be kind

Re: I can see why most hardcore Friday the 13th hates this - it has a st

Really? This has about much story as any of the others.

I actually liked the first half, but after reaching Manhattan it became awful. I hated the ending and I didn't like the way Jason moved from one place to another at the speed of light. It was silly. It started out great. I love movies set during a storm, but fizzled out. My least favorite of the series, but I did really like the movie while it was on the boat.

Friday the 13th part VIII is terrible IMO. The only one worse is part 10.

Part VII is probably my favorite one tho.
